By Essie Osborn

If you're looking for a pet, there's nothing like a new dog. The right type of dog will be an asset to the family, working as watchdog but also as a playmate for the kids and a companion for older family members. It's usually good to get a puppy which you can train right from the start to get along with everyone in the household, including the cat. On America's East Coast you may want to consider one of the collie puppies for sale in PA.

Collies originally came from the British Isles. They were a common sight in Scotland as well as in Northern England. They were traditionally kept as herder dogs and drovers, which is why another common name for this type of dog is the sheepdog.

Collies aren't one breed but a group of breeds. Among the British breeds are the old English sheepdog, the Welsh sheepdog, the Shetland sheepdog and the border collie, instantly recognizable by its black and white coloring. These breeds were taken to the British colonies, where they were mixed with other breeds to create new types of collies. The McNab shepherd originated in the United States while the New Zealand eye dog, as its name suggests, comes from New Zealand. Australians developed several types, notably the kelpie and the Australian cattle dog.

Collies became especially popular in the 19th century because Queen Victoria loved these dogs. Another famous collie owner was President Lyndon Johnson, whose dog was called Blanco. If asked to name famous collies, most people would probably mention Lassie, the fictional dog that was the star of several films and TV shows.

Lassie was a long-haired or rough collie. This breed usually has a coat in shades of brown and white but can also be a mottled gray in color. It is a beautiful furry dog that looks as if it could be closely related to a wolf.

Lassie's temperament was typical of most collies. They're intensely loyal and intelligent, but can also be trained with ease. Their gentle character makes them ideal as family dogs and as playmates for children. They're energetic and love exercise. This is especially true of border collies, which are best suited to an owner who is very active or who lives on a farm.

Collies are very easy to care for. In spite of their thick and long coat, you only need to brush them once a week or so. However, you may need to do this more often during certain times of year when the dogs start shedding. They're very clean animals too. However, they do need regular walks, at least once a day, to help them stay fit and burn off excess energy.

While it's easy to find collies in the PA classifieds or online, it's best to look for breeders through the American Kennel Club or another breeders' association. In this way you can avoid unethical puppy mills and you'll be sure to find a dog with a great pedigree. This is especially important if you're planning to use the animal as a show dog. If you only want a family dog, you may also consider visiting an animal shelter and adopting a rescue dog with collie characteristics.
