Proper Hog Waste Disposal & Management

By Lianne Derocco

The hog industry is big and this is one reason that many people get into this kind of business due to its potentials for high profitability. This is one industry kind that has also its lots of business concerns also. Agricultural waste and how to dispose of this or the hog wastes are also problems, aside from many other problems. Regulations are imposed due to the potential effects this can give to people and likewise to the environment. Proper containment and disposal are done because of the seriousness of the problem that owners may potentially face.

Agricultural waste products and the proper management in the disposal of these have to be faced by the owners. Hog waste including waste water are usually disposed of and contained in lagoons or waste disposal tanks constructed by the farm company. There is a potential problem that the company will face if the waste water from the lagoons leaks and seeps into the water table in the locality. If there are flaws in the waste disposal management and leakages are not checked, this can turn into a disaster for the company.

An efficient waste management method has to be in place, including solutions for agricultural waste and the disposal of waste products. There has to be a good system in the waste management methods used, not only in the proper disposal of hog waste but also in the collection and storage of waste water and swine waste in the lagoons. This is an important component in the whole swine production business.

Sludge forms in the lagoons, and there are several reasons why these form in the manure tanks and lagoons. If there is inadequate agitation of the hog waste and waste water, sludge can form, especially if this happens over a long period of time. In the lagoons, sludge form from the waste materials and this can include the excess and uneaten feeds that go with the waste. Sludge removal is very important, and not only for these reasons. Foul odor can be emitted and released to the environment which is not good, and this comes from the sludge and crust formed.

Effective swine waste management needs for the efficient removal and disposal of waste manure and also waste water and the proper collection and storage of these in the manure pits or lagoons. While collection and storage of the waste water and manure can be done, there has to be waste treatments done to lessen the hazardous effects it can do to the environment. There are biological treatments done with good results expected.

There is Lagoon Activator and AgraSphere which are biological products for the treatment of manure and waste water in the lagoons and manure pits. The Activator is a blend of natural bacteria and enzymes that is concentrated and it establishes a balanced environment in the lagoons. It is used together to complement AgraSphere which is a natural biodegradable product that will reduce sludge and crust formation. It is a safe to use product and just thrown into the lagoon or pits with no need for mixing. It is a product with time-release technology thus will work on its own.
