Useful Tips On Aquarium Maintenance

By Della Monroe

You are required to do maintenance of fish tanks on a regular basis. For those with fish tanks, they are bound to get untidy after some time due to the activity of various organisms inside. Water will also need to be topped up because some will have evaporated. A schedule for the maintenance will be required that guides your activities. With aquarium maintenance the tank will not have to get broken down whenever maintenance is done.

You will need to have the tank cleaned after every two weeks or so. It is even better to clean once every week so that not much effort is required for subsequent cleanups. Whenever water is changed, just about 20 percent of the water will need replacement. For the removal of algae, there is the use of an algae scrubber. The sides and front need to be scrubbed. For acrylic aquariums, you should be careful not to scrub the acrylic.

Before adding water to the tank, you need to add adequate amounts of chemicals which get rid of chlorine. You should also ensure that the water has the same temperature as that which was inside the tank. Should there be temperature swings, fish will be stressed. As a matter of fact, any water added to the tank needs to be of the same composition as that which was removed. Otherwise, fish will be negatively affected.

In the case of tanks with saltwater, the water needs to be prepared a day or so in advance. The reason for this is that freshly prepared saltwater is very toxic and affects fish. Time is required to allow all the salt to dissolve. To make this possible, the majority of people use new and clean rubber trash cans and buckets. The salt concentration should not be in excess.

The filter is a very important component when it comes to maintaining tanks. Depending on how bad the water is, the filters should be replaced once every three to four weeks. With regular change of filters, there will be less stress when it comes to maintenance practices. There is likelihood of development of rust near connections with filter or water inlets. This should be checked.

You will need to closely monitor the growth of algae. If the growth is not well controlled, there will be what is known as eutrophication which is the situation where there is excessive growth of the organisms. When this happens, there will be lack of oxygen within the tank. The result of this is that fish will suffocate and die because of lack of enough air.

There are various ways of controlling algae. One of them is through the use of sucker fish which consume them. While these fish are not the best looking, they an effective and will minimize the costs incurred. The other option is to try keep the tank away from the sun so that algae growth is controlled. When algae are exposed to the sun, there will be fast growth of the organisms.

When doing change of water, you will need to use water conditioners. They will help in the removal of chlorine. In addition to that, there will also be the removal of such impurities as excess ammonia.
