Pomeranian dog breed also goes by two other names, which are derived from the parent name Pomeranian. The two derived names are Pom and Pom Pom. This breed is of the Spitz type and owes its origin to the Pomerania region. This region is currently part of Northern Poland and Eastern Germany. The dog is a descendant of larger Spitz type of dogs, especially the German Spitz. They are officially classified by the Federation Cynologique Internationale as part of the German Spitz breed. In many countries, they are known as dwarf Spitz. It falls under the toy breed of dogs.

Poms have been popular for a very long time. Royal owners in huge part contributed to the wide popularity of the breed. Queen Victoria in particular owned a very tiny tan-colored Pom that made that color popular at that time. The size of Poms is very small. Their weight ranges between 1-9-3.5 kilograms while the height ranges between 13-28 centimeters at the withers. The breed is well known for the ruff of fur that the top coat forms on the neck. Also, there is feathery hair around the hindquarters. They come in a wide range of colors including cream, sable, orange, red, white, blue, tan, and black.

Various color combinations are also possible. The most commonly observed colors are white, orange, black, and cream. The merle Pom was developed recently by breeders. Daily grooming is necessary for keeping the thick double coat good-looking. Shedding occurs constantly in this breed and is part of the reason for the need of daily grooming. Grooming is simple and only takes a short while to complete.

Trimming must be done after every one to two months. The inner coat is long, straight, and has a harsh texture. On the contrary, the outer coat is short, soft, and thick. Tangling and knotting of the coat happens easily, particularly the inner coat. The legs are short and are covered in the thick coat, which makes them to blend in well with the rest of the body.

Pomeranians have a lively, friendly, and playful nature towards human beings. However, they show a lot of aggressiveness against other dogs. They remain alert and are stay aware of any changes in their environment. They bark at new stimuli, something that can develop into a habit of barking excessively. They are very defensive in their territories. Intelligence level is very high, which makes them very trainable.

On average, Pomeranians have a life expectancy that ranges from 12 to 16 years. Health problems are minimal if they are kept on a good diet and exercised enough. Proper grooming is a necessity to prevent the development of certain medical conditions. Eyes, ears, and teeth need to be cleaned well. Dry food is recommended because they are particularly prone to early tooth loss.
