Recipes for Dog Treats

By Geraldine Dimarco

If you're taking the time to read this, I can make two fairly accurate guesses. One, you are a pet owner; and two, you are a good pet owner because you are actually taking time to look for better ways to ensure your pet's best health. That is very commendable. Well, still your Google clicking fingers because your search is over. An excellent way to a healthy and happy pet is here-by making fantastic homemade dog treats.

You know sometimes the word "homemade" scares people when it shouldn't. Really, it's not intimidating at all. If you can be in the kitchen without burning yourself, you can make canine food fairly easily. There are numerous recipes for dog treats that you can find in the Internet today. In fact, you can surf the web for these right after reading the article. So, what is it we need to know about canine recipes?

Well, one of the first things you need to check is the ingredients that will be included in the meals. Dogs can usually eat the same fare as we but there are some food substances that are very dangerous to them. When they consume large amounts of these harmful ingredients they can be subject to very painful and sometime terminal health conditions.

You must know what these are and make sure that your dog will not ingest them. Find a list and keep it by the kitchen to always remind you. Examples of these ingredients are chocolates, caffeine, alcohol, any form of drugs, onions, raisins, grapes, avocados, cat food, baby food, onions, macadamia nuts and citrus oils. Remove them from recipes or find another one you can use.

The great thing with making these homemade dog treats is that it can be as interesting as possible-you are the main author of it. You can boil pieces of chicken or organ meat in water, flavored with spices. Drain and slice them up for mouth-watering goodies. And how about sprinkling parmesan cheese or spreading a layer of peanut butter on top of a healthy biscuit? It sounds delicious even to me.

Even if you know you have delectable treats ready-you have to make it easy for the dogs to consume. Slice them up in small pieces that will be easier to chew. If you are cooking the meat, remove the bones beforehand. Otherwise, the bones will splinter and this may cause the animal to choke on them.

Look for the healthiest recipes for dog treats you can find. But make no mistake, it doesn't mean you can overfeed the dog just because the food is "healthy". So many canine sicknesses could have been avoided by simply monitoring the calorie and nutrient intake of the animal. Engage the dog in regular exercise for his best health.

Remember, it is up to you to ensure your pet's well-being. Take care of him but more than that-spend quality time with him. This is worth more to him than anything combined. Of course, I don't really need to tell you that- find a healthy and happy dog and you will find a loving master not far behind.
