By Leanna Freeman

The time has finally come and you have agreed to get your family a new canine. The first thing to do is to decide on a breed. There are so many available to choose from and it would be pointless not doing some research on a few breeds and their in home dog training needs, before buying one. Prior to purchasing a new animal for the family, there are many things to take into consideration.

Something you would have to consider is the space you can provide for the exercise of the dog. Often it is the smaller dog that needs the most space when it come to time for exercise. You will also have to remember that the animals will have to be taken for walks in the park at least twice daily.

Dogs are very social animals and in order for your animal to be well balanced you will need to take him to some form of puppy training program. Here he will soon learn many life lessons and also he will realize who the alpha of the family is. The training that he goes through at school has to be carried out when he is at home too.

The person who takes the dog for training must explain to the whole family what instruction the dog is going through so that they too can continue the commands for the dog at home. The animal will then understand everyone and respond accordingly. This means that he will not only listen to one person, but the whole family.

Should there be things that you would like him to learn over and above the social training, you may want to try the same techniques used at the school, at home too. Remember that training a dog is as easy as you make it. He will respond to your voice so it is important that you never scream at him if he makes a mistake.

Should there be something you want to teach him at home, all it is going to take is repetition. One must be prepared to show him over and over again what it is that you want him to do. You are never to shout or hit him if he does not react the way in which you want him to. This is cruel and unacceptable behavior and will only make your dog scared of you. No one wants their animal to fear them as this defeats the object of having such a companion.

In order to house train your little pup, you are going to have to go to some effort in doing so. You are doing to have to train him to go out after he has eaten to do his business on the grass. To do this, you are going to have to pick him up and take him outside to the place where you want him to go.

The same in home dog training technique will apply for you to teach him to sit when he gets treats. Tell him to sit, press his read downwards and then give him a delicacy. Soon he will learn that if he sits down you will give him something mice to eat.
