Discover The Exotic Bengal Cat And Find Bengal Cat Breeders

By Andrea Davidson

The Bengal cat is a hybrid, a cross between an Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic feline. Early mention of Bengal cat breeders goes back over 100 years but the origin of the modern breed is the 1960's and 70's. All cats today should be at least 4 generations removed from their wild ancestor, resulting in an inquisitive, loving, intelligent, active, and beautiful domestic cat requiring no special care.

Bengal cats are admired for their wild appearance. They retain the color and patterning of the Asian Leopard cat with large spots or rosettes along the back and sides, and a light or white belly. Striping is common on the forelegs, as are horizontal stripes around the eyes.

Bengal cats come in many colors: snow, brown, seal lynx point, mink, sepia, silver. Patterns can be spotted or marbled. Primary colors are brown and snow. All colors can have marble or spotted markings. Snow bengals are also divided into blue-eyes or any other color eyes.

An inquisitive nature and high activity level makes this a very social cat. A bored Bengal can be quite destructive. These cats usually enjoy and appreciate another cat for play and company. They adapt well to children and other pets. They're easily trainable, and can be taught to walk on a leash.

When you bring your kitten home, use the same litter and food that was used by the breeder. Switch to new brands a handful at a time. Introduce other pets through a closed door, then through a gate or other see through barrier, then supervise contact for a day or two.

These cats are agile and active. They love to climb so kitten proof your home by putting away all breakables. Most are fascinated by water so it's best to keep the toilet lid down. They can jump so don't allow your kitten outside on an open balcony and don't leave any windows open. Be sure potted plants are not poisonous if nibbled on.

Use clapping or a squirt bottle to discourage unwanted behaviors. Sticky tape will keep your kitten off forbidden areas. Also the smell of citrus is a repellent to most cats. Use toys or catnip to encourage the use of a scratching post.

Males weigh 12-15 pounds. Females weigh around 10 pounds. These cats live an average domestic cat lifespan of 16 years. Between 2 and 6 months, they often go through a fuzzy, gray, rather ugly growth phase. This will pass and your kitten will grown into a beautiful leopard-looking cat.

The buyers contract will specify if you are purchasing a pet or a show/breeding cat. Reputable bengal cat breeders will not sell cats for breeding to unknown breeders. If you're interested in joining this group you will need to find a mentor to help you develop your knowledge and reputation.

Bengal cat breeders want to sell their kittens to forever homes. Felines sold as pets must be kept indoors. They must be spayed and neutered. The buyer signs an agreement to return the cat to the breeder for re-homing in the event they can no longer care for their pet.
