German Shepherd Whines Once Left Behind In Kennel

By Reyes Lomax

Dear Mr. Katz:

I've a six month old German Shepherd named Thor. Getting read your book, I applied your methods to him and he responded quite swiftly, to my surprise!

He's quite excellent at a sit-stay and down-stay now, that is extremely, very helpful. I do have one particular dilemma that I couldn't repair with him even though.

Here are the situations as well as the difficulty:

Thor lives outdoors in a dog kennel/pen point, I stroll him each day and play ball with him and often ensure he has meals and water, I brush him and I invest lots of time with him. But whenever I leave him, he sits and whines for half an hour! He just won't be quiet! And if I go back out to produce him stop, as quickly as he sees me, he's quiet... but as soon as I leave, he starts whining and barking once more, so I just ignore him, nevertheless it has gotten to become such an issue that the neighbors have started to complain about it. I do not make a huge deal out of leaving him or something. I just say 'Bye Thor' and leave.

Can you assist? Christina Hathaway

Dear Christina:

Welcome for the wonderful world of German Shepherd ownership.

Here's what you are able to attempt:

1. Wait until he genuinely begins whining and barking loudly. Then make use of the Bridging method as described in the book (No, NO, No) and go back and right him together with the collar. Leave the pinch collar on, but maintain the tab with you. Hook the tab around the collar, correct the dog, then take the tab off and walk away. Please note that you'll also desire to later practice placing the tab on the dog, feeding him a cookie, then taking the tab off, to ensure that the dog doesn't come to associate wearing a tab using a correction.

2. If Tip #1 doesn't perform, pick a time when your neighbors are away. Ignore the dog. Wait till he finally settles down and is quiet... then wait yet another 2 minutes. Go back for the dog and let him out. Your aim would be to teach the dog that becoming quiet will get him what he wants.

3. Just ignore him. Ultimately he will understand that this behavior does not solution the results he desires, however it could take a couple of weeks. Also, boost his everyday physical exercise regimen, substantially. You could possibly also experiment with altering his dog meals.

Different things function for different dogs with regards to this behavior. However, there's no quick cure-all.

That's all for now, folks! Adam.
