Schnauzer is a breed of dog which has its origin in Germany. It was bred in the early fifteenth century throughout the sixteenth century. In the German language, schnauzer means snout and it is a colloquial for moustache. The bearded snout of the dog makes it distinct from other breeds. The bearded snout is the source of the name. The breed does not have the typical terrier temperament, which has made it to be viewed as a terrier-type dog. People can purchase schnauzer puppies from the many breeders available around the world.

This dog consists of three major kinds of breeds, that is, the miniature, standard, and the giant. Terms such as teacup and toy are used to market undersized miniature breeds. However, toy and teacup are not breeds of the dog. It is good to know these facts because many people are often confused about the various breeds of schnauzers.

The size of the modern-day Standard breed is what the original breed was like. The original schnauzers were bred to act as yard and guard dogs. They often were used to catch rats in various places. The miniature breed was reach at after crossbreeding other breeds with the original dog. Among the breeds that were crossbred with the original breed to produce miniatures are poodles and affenpinscher. Other breeds of dogs were used in the process too.

Miniature breeds have shoulders standing a feet tall. Normal ones weigh 6.4 kg to 9.1 kg. They are energetic and highly intelligent. Specific color coats are recognized by the American Kennel Club. Common coat colors are silver, pepper, and black. Black and silver usually occur together in some dogs and it is allowed.

The American Kennel Club does not accept dogs that have white or multi-colored coats as miniatures. Compared to giant and standard breeds, miniatures are weaker and should not live outside. They are very loyal to the owners. They befriend almost everybody and have rarely been seen being aggressive to strangers. However, they never hesitate to bark at strange people and animals.

Standard schnauzers are about 46 centimeters tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 20 kilograms. They are categorized as working dogs where they are used to guard places. Historically, they have been used during times of war to carry messages and to do police work. Red Cross is one of the organizations that have employed their services in various applications.

Giant schnauzers reach a height of 2 feet at the shoulder when fully grown. Their weight ranges between 25 and 36 kilograms and like the standard breed, they are used as working dogs. They were developed in the seventeenth century in Swabia. They resulted after crossbreeding the standard breed with several other breeds including black Great Danes, Thuringian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Rottweillers, Dobermans, Boxers, and Bouvier des Flandres.
