How To Cope With Pet Grieving

By Shirley West

Losing a pet can be as traumatic as losing a family member. This is especially true when your pet is your best friend and only companion. You may have taken your dog for a walk everyday. You would have seen your cat every day. One needs to go through all of these feelings on your own without someone telling you how to process this. Pet grieving is very real as many folk have found out.

You may be feeling guilty at a time like this because of the fact that you had expensive vet bills that you simply could not afford to pay. Your pet could have been involved in a serious accident. One always wishes that they could have been there at the time. However, these are thoughts that you have to put aside.

Some people may feel guilty during this time, not being able to do enough for the animal. It may have been in an accident and you may been been feeling guilty, wishing you were there at the time. Vet bills are expensive and this is something that you were not able to afford. Operations could also be something that you were not able to afford.

Children will also need some attention during their grieving process because they may not have faced a death before. They would have questions going through their mind. This would be a difficult time for them. This especially applies when a dog or cat needs to be put to sleep. They would have a close bond with the animals and it would be traumatic for them.

Unfortunately, this is a slow process, and different for everyone. Often, when you keep busy, you will find that it is easier to manage. Many people become isolated and this causes depression. Things will only become worse at a time like this. It is, however, a good idea to talk to others who have lost a pet.

Other pets will also be affected. You have to remember that your pets who have been with your cat or dog that died would have developed a close bond. They would have been a brother or sister, and they need attention during this time. Make sure you give them love by playing with them. This will also help you on your journey.

Dealing with your emotions is very important. Many folk are so overwhelmed that they choose not to deal with their feelings. They may just get on with things and carry on with life. However, this is not the best way forward because there will come a time when you will have to face your pain. It is best to face up to this as soon as you can.

It is not always easy to know when your pet needs to be put to sleep. Sometimes, pets are very old and are unable to cope with life anymore. There are illnesses that they develop, such as cancer. One often just wants to put them out of their suffering. One knows this is the right thing to do. Obviously, at the same time you don't want to part with them.
