Learning Cavachon Puppy Traits And Needs

By Ines Flores

Any time a person is considering adopting a new pet, they should take the time to learn some details specific to the breed. Before making a commitment that could last as long as twenty years, one should at least be aware of factors like the dog's probable adult size, if they have any special health concerns, how much they shed, their temperaments and just how active they may be. This type of knowledge can make taking care of a Cavachon puppy much more pleasurable.

This particular type is labeled a designer dog. That means that two separate breeds, in this instance a Bichon Frise and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, are combined in an effort to acquire a particular look or to accentuate certain traits and characteristics. The results are specialized pets that have the appearance and qualities desired.

If this breed is under consideration, potential owners must be aware that the AKC does not recognize these designer dogs as they are not purebred. The reasons for their creation did not include being shown professionally. They do have many fine qualities that are highly desirable such as their irresistibly cute appearance, small stature, sweet disposition and hypo-allergenic coats.

Averaging between 12 and 16 inches of height, and just 10-20 pounds of weight when full grown, they are considered a small to medium canine. They come in a variety of solid colors or a beautiful mixture of three. Their appearance is quite sporty, having rather large, expressive eyes, a sturdy build and an alertness that combines with an animated liveliness.

This breed is known to be extremely affectionate and loving, being very family oriented, creating deep bonds and intense attachments to their people and fellow house pets. Their intelligence is high and their aggression is very low, however, they will bark as a way to announce visitors or strange happenings. Being actively social by nature, these pups are great with other animals and are generally very accepting of children.

There are two styles of coats typical to this breed; long, silky and slightly waved like the spaniel, or soft and loosely curled as the Bichon. The longer fur will require regular brushing to avoid tangles, and occasional grooming would help avoid matting in the curls, but neither one is prone to heavy shedding. It is this particular trait that makes this dog especially attractive to people who deal with dander allergies.

Individuals should know which health issues the breed is apt to encounter. Ears need to receive regular cleaning in an effort to avoid recurring infections and because inattention might lead to premature tooth loss, prioritized dental hygiene is recommended. A variety of skin conditions and allergic reactions to flea bites are common and as they age, heart conditions and hip dysplasia become even bigger risks.

For best behavioral results, socializing with both people and other animals should begin as early as possible. As they form strong bonds, they need to around someone, another pet, or have the radio or television on at all times to control separation anxiety. It is also helpful to know that house training can be a bit more difficult than with other breeds so patience and persistence is necessary.
