The Basic Characteristics Of Cavachons

By Kristen Baird

Numerous breeds of dogs exist and not all are considered to be purebred. In fact, a great number of these animals are created by putting together two different breeds of dog. Cavachons are a product of this practice. Referred to as designer dogs, these animals are the mixing of the Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles.

People who want to own one as a pet should do adequate research to learn more about them. As this dog is the mixing of two separate breeds, there is no universal standard for them. That is, every dog may have unique characteristics. There are still some basic traits associated with these animals.

Usually these are small in size. This may make them ideal for people living in small spaces who still want to have a pet. When fully grown, most stand only 12 to 13 inches. The coat of this animal is usually wavy, silky and soft. It might be entirely white or white with tan, black or apricot markings.

This animals is known for its tolerant, accepting and gentle personality. It is an ideal animal for families and those with pets already in the household. Usually this breed is energetic but not to the point of hyperactivity. They enjoy moderate exercise on a daily basis, which is important for keeping them fit and healthy. Games of catch, walks or other activities can provide necessary stimulation and energy release.

Generally, the dogs are lovable and make great companions. They crave attention and companionship. This is especially true when they are puppies. The dogs should be handled with care while still young, especially because of their small size.

The puppies are quick to learn and quite smart. This is important to know for those interested in training the animals. Pet owners are to remain consistent in their efforts to ensure that the dog learns and understands what is to be done. This dog is best trained while it is still a puppy or at a younger age. Socialization and obedience training are encouraged sooner rather than later for optimal results.

These dogs may have a lot of hair but are not expected to shed that much. Similar to other designer dogs, owners or breeders might suggest that these animals are hypoallergenic, meaning they create less of a response in those allergic to dander. Despite the lack of shedding, the animals will require some level of grooming. This is important to keep the coat from looking dirty or matted. Sometimes a trim is necessary. Grooming may be carried out by pet owners or professionals.

The health concerns for these animals are much like those related to other small breeds. The Cavachon dog is more likely to develop an ear infection, which is often a result of the hair growing in the ears. To prevent these infections, pet owners may have to regularly clean the ears and keep an eye out for symptoms of infection. Other potential problems that might arise include flea allergies, heart murmurs and eye ulcerations. It is integral to find a trustworthy breeder with healthy dogs.
