Leash Training For Your Dog

By Garrett McMahan

Every time you head to the park to walk your dog and you feel like the dog is walking you rather than the other way around, you are in good company as this is quite common. An irksome experience is felt when dogs drag their owners along or dart around wherever they wish to go. To let your dog have a great time and enjoy the experience yourself, you can train them to walk properly to let you be the guide.

You might be surprised to learn that your dog's leash-walking habits actually say a lot about your relationship with your pet. Dogs that drag their owner and those that have to be dragged away from bushes and trees are controlling the walk rather than allowing their owner to set the pace and guide the experience. Basically, the dog is unaware of the owner during the walk. The leash is simply an impediment that prevents them from going at whatever pace they want and where they want.

What we really want, however, is an experience that is pleasant both for the dog and the owner. You don't want to be dragged along, nor do you want to keep untangling yourself from the leash as your dog wanders about. With that in mind, you will need to train your dog how to walk properly while on a leash. After all, they are not born knowing how to do this, so it's up to us to provide this dog obedience training.

It's important to find a method that truly teaches you how to understand your dog's unique personality especially with the many different dog leash training methods available today. It will be easier for you to adjust training to suit your dog if both of you can learn to understand each other. Furthermore, prior to the walk, it is ideal to spend some time playing with your dog. A ton of energy needs to be released each day for many dogs and the walk is often the main exercise of the day. However, dogs will be more relaxed and less resistant to training especially if you spend some time prior to the walk playing fetch or running about in your yard or in the house.

You can make one of the best investments today with proper dog training. Improving the bond and relationship between you and your dog as well as helping them learn to behave properly are taught along the way. Dog training classes are usually avoided and one of the main reason why is due to time. With work and family obligations, it is often hard to fit in a schedule for dog training classes. The best alternative for these people might be found by opting for a DVD training system, such as The Dog's Way.

This obedience training systems consists of 12 lesson spread over five DVDs as well as a workbook that follows along with each lesson, reminder cards that you can take on walks and access to a private, "students-only" website with helpful problem solving tips. These dog training videos include lessons about all types of basic behavior such as training a dog to sit and stay, walk loosely on a leash, coming when called, staying quiet and much more.
