Guideline For Help For Blind Dogs

By Tammie Caldwell

Most people think that having a blind dog can be very exhausting. It is at first but after a while when one is used to, you will find that it can be fun and a fulfilling experience. At first its scary to have such a responsibility thrown at your lap all of a sudden when your dog becomes blind. Help for blind dogs is a very sensitive issue since a dog that is visually impaired will need more constant care and it could be overwhelming if you do not learn the right way to give the care.

Maneuvering around the house can be much more tasking for the dog if you change the position of your furniture around the house. Move them only if it is extremely necessary and then limit the number of times you do that. It only confuses them and will result in it getting disoriented and most times scared because of the new environment.

The favorite part of the day for any dog is going for walks. It is healthy for the both of you so as much as your pet is blind, take him for a walk. There a few things you have to do differently like using a harness that has a short leash which will help you get more control over the dog and also it will feel more secure because you will be closer.

It can be difficult to try to avoid sharp objects in the house not knowing where they are. That is the situation your pet is in. Remove all sharp objects to avoid the risk of your dog getting hurt and also guide him so that he can move easily from room to room without the fear of getting hurt by using floor runners. Textured ones are normally safer.

Do not try to sneak up on them. This will only scare him hence frightening him. Also, when they are sleeping, try to give him space and do not approach him while he is sleeping. If your pet normally stays outside, keep the landscape to a minimum to lessen his confusion. Also, keep your compound fenced so that he might not wander off.

Attaching phrases and familiar words to your daily communication with your pet helps it feel connected to you as the sound of your voice reassures and gives it a sense of security. The words that you can use include; stay, eat, sit and go. You can create your own words that you will both be comfortable with depending on your daily routine.

When you have visitors in your house, it is advisable to tell them in advance that your pet is blind so that they will not end up trying to pet your dog resulting in it being hostile hence an ugly scene at your house. When you go for a walk or whenever you are outside the house, put a sticker or a bandana on your dog so that people will be mindful of its condition.

When dealing with dogs that have visual impairment, one should be determined enough. Leash the blind dog so that it can be able to know where you are. This sets the dogs mind at rest. During night hours, the dog should be kept in a curbed area, but during the day you should give them freedom to wander around.
