Products For Blind Dogs And How You Can Help Them

By Tammie Caldwell

Some dogs are born unable to see, while others lose their vision later in life. Even if your canine loses its vision later in life it can still live a happy and productive life. Stores carry many products for blind dogs that can aid them. A pup will generally do better in life if the owner does not over compensate by giving too much sympathy. Treat your pet as normally as possible so he or she will feel normal.

Often the very best way to help your pet is to treat it as you would a dog who could see. Do not be too concerned about him walking into things. A canine has a very could recall memory. The home is likely memorized enough that he can navigate it quite well. The backyard as well. People might not even realize that the dog has lost its vision, because it can navigate so well.

A medical alert tag is one product that you should get for your pooch. Place it on his or her collar. This is in case your pet ever gets away and gets lost. Anyone who finds your animal will instantly know that the dog is blind when they read the tag. They will then be better able to help it and hopefully get it back to you quickly.

Pet stores sell special harnesses for vision impaired dogs. The harness is worn like a traditional harness, but a protruding device is positioned in front of the animal's head. This device will bang into something before your pet. This protects her from bumps and bangs. She is also alerted to items in front of her when the device encounters something.

Scent markers are placed near items that your pup must be able to get to. For example the food or water dish. The dog can smell the scent and knows to go towards the scent. The markers can be refreshed monthly and they will last indefinitely. Place them indoors and outdoors. You will not smell them, but your dog will.

There are leashes that are made for vision impaired and disabled dogs. They allow you to lead the dog so that he or she knows where to go. They are unlike traditional leashes in that they are short and not made for taking walks. They are wonderful for helping you to help your pet.

One reason that your animal may not be able to navigate your home is if you have remodeled or rearranged things. It is best not to do this if your dog cannot see. Doing so can disorient a dog. This will cause stress and anxiety.

Keep in mind that your pooch can and will have a very good life with your help. Buy helpful products, give him love and attention, and most importantly treat him as you always did. Go for walks, play games, and spend lazy mornings lounging on the couch together.
