Choosing Royal Standard Poodles For Sale

By Donald Snyder

Choosing to adopt a dog is something to which one should give serious consideration. It is a good idea to gather information about the particular breed of interests since factors like personality traits, energy levels, health, grooming requirements, temperament and size can all have a major impact. When looking for Royal Standard Poodles for sale, knowing what to expect can make the selection easier.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Poodle is the 8th most popular breed in the U. S. This is due to several factors, including their very elegant and attractive looks, their fun-loving and energetic personalities, and especially their extremely high intelligence. These dogs are frequent winners in shows, but are equally as wonderful as family pets or personal companions.

In this specific breed, Toys, Miniature, and Standards, make up the only size categories officially recognized by the AKC. Royals is a term used to describe those that are larger than one would normally expect. Sometimes called Giants, they can reach a weight of 90 pounds in adulthood, have a shoulder height of up to 28 inches, and have an average life span of up to 18 years.

When properly groomed, these dogs take on a square appearance, due to their proportionate legs giving them the same length and height measurements. Their small, roundish head sports eyes that are dark, almond-shaped, and far-set, a long, narrow muzzle, and flat ears that lay very close to their skull. Arched toes tip their petite oval feet while their top line is quite level, and the tail upright and rigid.

One unusual trait of this breed is that they actually have hair, not fur, which can be soft and curly, or tightly corded, both being no-shed and low dander. They dogs are generally solid in color, appearing in hues of blue, white, grey, silver, brown, Cafe Au Lait, apricot, and cream, though black is the most commonly found. They may also be of Parti, Tuxedo, Phantom, or Mismarked varieties, meaning they are multi-toned.

Anyone choosing to adopt this type of puppy should be aware that their color could change up to around 2 years of age. The coloring of the parents will not always determine that of the pups. Puppies within the same litter can come out and different hues no matter what the Sire or Dame might have looked like.

Because matting and splitting can occur when their constantly growing hair and nails are not tended properly, these dogs can be a bit high maintenance in grooming. They tend to demand a lot of attention from other household pets, or humans, and need plenty of exercise because they are quite active and extremely social. They learn quickly because they have a higher level of intelligence, but they will claim the Alpha position if the owners are not consistent in their training and discipline.

There is a lot of versatility to this type of dog as they are comfortable in any type of climate and are suited for both houses and apartments. When encountering unexpected or loud noises, they will bark to protect their family, however, the breed is not an aggressive one. Being aware of the various attributes before adopting a puppy will assist in creating a smoother and more pleasant experience for all.
