By Rebecca Sanders

Pets the world over give great love and companionship to their owners and masters, whether they be cats or dogs, the most common pets around. You may be in the market for a dog at the moment, and have been thinking about visiting some beagle breeders in California for a puppy. Before you fully commit yourself however, do finish this article so that you can be better informed.

The beagle is classified as a hunting hound which were popular around before the 1700s but were replaced by the quicker foxhound for hunting expeditions. Today some still use the beagle to hunt small prey like rabbit but most are kept as pets and companions.

Due to the fact that it used to be a hunting hound, it has quite a reserve of energy, It will not do to keep it cooped up in small spaces for extended periods of time. It should have at least an hour of walking per day and be prepared for it to chase anything that catches its fancy. Despite its small size it does bark a lot, which can be annoying for your neighbors. Thus it is really not a breed designed to live in places where you may have plenty of neighbors.

This breed is very intelligent and needs a lot to keep it occupied. Should it have nothing to occupy itself with, it will start to chew things and dig wherever it pleases. If left alone to their own devices they will become destructive. They need to be mentally occupied a majority of the time and they also need a lot of attention.

Despite its intelligence, it is a dog that is quite difficult to train as it seems to have problems associating rewards with commands. It is therefore a stubborn breed and really not meant for an inexperienced dog owner A lot of patience is needed in owning this breed as it also takes a while for it to be housebroken as well.

Depending on how much exercise you give it and how you feed it this dog can reach anything between eighteen to thirty pounds when it reaches maturity. It also has an average lifespan of around ten to fifteen years and will stand a little over one foot at the shoulder when fully grown.

One of the best skills that this dog has is that it is a super sniffer, and many say that it is a nose on legs. It likes to sniff a lot of things and these dogs have been known to be great drug and bomb sniffer dogs. Thus you will always see this dog sniffing all the time looking for something interesting to sniff at or smell.

These dogs do not make the very good guard dogs at all due to their friendly nature. This friendliness also make them easy prey for thieves. As such they must be kept inside as much as possible to prevent them from being dog napped by unscrupulous persons.
