Tips For Storing Your Feeds After Hay Delivery In Connecticut

By Maria Thomas

Apart from buying high quality feeds, you should also ensure that you store them well. The feeds can be quite sensitive, so if you do not keep them well they can easily go bad. This can lead to great loss of money, aside from the fact that your animals might run out of food. Once you get your hay delivery in Connecticut, here is how you should keep the feed.

You need to keep the moisture content of the feed low. This is mainly to prevent mold from growing on it. This can lead to great loss. This requires that the feed be well covered both from the top and the sides as well. Leaving the sides open can cause the feeds that are on the sides to get bleached by the rays from the sun.

Have plenty of space to keep the stuff. You should have enough space to allow you to walk around and comfortably stack the bales up. Good ventilation is also advisable, since if the area is too stuffed up, it can lead to fire outbreaks. This is usually caused by heat build up between the bales. If there isn't enough ventilation to allow this build up to escape, it can cause a fire.

You should not order too much feeds. Order just as much as your storage space can accommodate. This is to prevent the bales from getting wasted, as a result of being stored outdoors in the open. If you do not have plenty of space, organize to have a regular supply, so that you will have adequate feeds throughout the year.

Order from local suppliers. This is much less expensive than ordering from out of town. In addition, during times when the weather is quite harsh, local suppliers will be more likely to be able to deliver as compared to suppliers who have to come from far.

When storing the food, consider covering it up when it is outdoors. You can use plastic coverings or whatever waterproof material you can find. Just make sure to place it on.

When keeping the feeds, it is best that you have an idea of how you are organizing them. Know which feeds were supplied first, so that you can always start with the oldest feeds and work your way to the most recent ones. Keep the bales in such a way that you can access the oldest ones much more easily.

The feeds can easily catch fire due to the fact that they are usually dry. For this reason, keep it as far away from fire as possible. Remove any stuff that can cause fire to start. This includes things like storing diesel and kerosene far from the bales. Also, do not keep your machineries there. It is advisable that you do not store the bales in the same building where you live. Keep them in a detached building.
