What Savannah Kittens Are All About

By Anna Wood

A savannah cat is a kind of cat that came into existence after interbreeding a domestic cat and a serval. The domestic cat that was interbred with a serval cat was a Siamese. The cat was owned by a person whose name was Suzi Woods. In April of 1986, Judee Frank did the crossbreeding process. In 1996 the writing of the earliest document for registration of the breed was done and presented to the ICA (International Cat Association). It was until 2001 the breed for registration was accepted. This article presents information on savannah kittens.

These cats are usually tall and slim, something that makes them to appear bigger than they actually are. How big the cat is usually depends on sex and the generation. The largest cats are usually the F1 hybrid males. The F2 generations are also usually comparable in size to the F1s. The large size of the F1 and F2 generations is usually as a result of a greater genetic influence of the serval ancestor.

The physical characteristics of the first generation offspring are normally very identical to those of the parent servals. This genetic influence of the serval however diminishes in the next generations. The weight of the first generation ranges from 3.6 kilograms and 9.1 kilograms. However, the weight diminishes in generations beyond the second generation to 3.2 and 6.8 kilograms. A big variance in weight can be observed in kittens of same litter.

TICA has enforced standards which require the kittens to have a coat that has spotted pattern. Since all savannah cats normally possess this coloration, spotted pattern is usually the only acceptable feature of the coat color. With this, no any other color or coat pattern is acceptable. Examples include: marble, snow, rosette, cinnamon, chocolate, blue, and lilac colors.

These kittens and cats in general exhibit the loyalty of a canine. They follow their owners around the house and provide great company. One can also train them to walk on a leash. The cats have been reported to be very social with strangers and may not need introduction of any kind. They may also coexist with other pets and dogs without much trouble.

Unfortunately, some can be less social and distant. When this is the case, they will growl and hiss at other animals or strangers. This situation can be avoided altogether through early socialization of the kitten. This can be achieved by ensuring they are maximally exposed to other animals and dogs.

A Savannah kitten likes water unlike many other kinds of cats that fear water a lot. These kittens would play around with water and in some occasions submerge their entire bodies into the water. Some individuals take baths with their kittens in the washrooms. When these cats wag or flick their tails, it is a sign of being happy.

There are several different places where these kittens can be purchased. When purchasing, it is important to pay attention to the physical characteristics of the cat. The seller should also be able to present a certificate of registration of the cat. The price usually varies from one location to another and from one seller to another.
