Are There Any Large Dogs That Dont Drool

By Richard Green

Some people will not consider owning a big dog because they think they all slobber. It is true that there are breeds which are more likely to have excess saliva and spread that saliva around the home and onto nearby people. Some animals seem to have strings of saliva hanging from their mouth nearly all the time but there are some large dogs that dont drool.

A dog will salivate when expecting a meal or chewing toys and bones and this is perfectly normal. As Pavlov noticed, a pet will salivate at the expectation of a meal regardless of whether it is food time or food is in sight. The amount of saliva produced varies by breed. Whether the slobber then becomes a slimy mess depends on the dog being able to contain the saliva.

Breeds that have long jowls and short jaws are less likely to be able to hold their saliva in their mouth. Frequently it will run down the jowl and the dog might then shake its head to remove the offending slime. This can result in globs over furniture walls and nearby people. Owners of breeds like boxers normally carry a good supply of tissues or kitchen towel to combat this.

For people who do not want to wipe slobber from furniture and clothes but do like large dogs then select a breed that has a short jowl. Jowls are the droopy lip flaps most prominent in breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs and Boxers. Breeds with shorter jowls are normally in the hound or working dog groups as long flapping jowls would be problematic when herding and hunting.

Big dogs in the hound group include Afghans, Salukis, German Shepherds, Borzois and Wolfhounds. These all have short jowls and long faces which are less prone to drooling. The Alaskan Malamute is a working dog often referred to as the juggernaut of huskies. This lovely looking wolf like breed is also unlikely to slobber but it does need to be worked to prevent it getting bored.

Made famous by the Disney movie, the Dalmatian is a real beauty with its spotty coat. Bred to be carriage dogs, to this day they will still run and run. There are few horse drawn carriages for them to run beside in the modern world, but they do like s lot of exercise.

Irish Wolfhounds and Afghan hounds are lovely to look at very impressive. Both of these breeds need regular grooming to maintain their coats and to prevent matting. The Saluki is another stunning breed with its sleek shape and long furry ears. They are easy to groom and very intelligent dogs. They can run incredibly fast and will need a lot of exercise.

All animals have saliva as it is a necessary part of the eating process. That means no dog is going to be completely free of dribbles. Even a breed which is not known for dribbling can still have an individual with a mouth defect and drools more than most. If you are someone who cannot bear the thought of any saliva then perhaps a fish would be a better choice of pet.
