Origin of the safari cat is when the Geoffroy's Cat was crossed cross with the domestic shorthair. The hybrid is the result called the safari cat. The Geoffroy's cat is a wild cat that is somewhat related to the South American ocelot. Due to the differing number of chromosomal pairs in wild and domesticated cats, it can be a very difficult to have a successful pairing. Breeding was first done in the 1970s.

Another reason why they are difficult to breed is that the male Geoffroy's cat may attack or even kill the domestic shorthair it is paired with, especially for the first generation. Once they do breed successfully, the result, called a safari, which can be called as the world's tallest domestic cat. It is a cat that is both gentle and calm in temperament.

According to TICA, or The International Cat Association registry, there are only about 70 owners of this exotic pet. Exotic is a term given when a breed is a result of the cross breeding of a wild parent with a domesticated one. This breed has the same distinction as Chausi, Bengals and Savannah cats as being exotic, but is considered as the "Rolls Royce of Exotic Cats".

Appearance wise they do look very svelte and longer than a domestic cat, and they also come in many different colors. The color difference is interesting to note occurs depending on the geographical location of this breed, ranging anywhere from black to silvery grey to deep orange.

It is not so difficult to take care of this breed as it does not need a lot of care and not so finicky with its food. It can be quite happy with ordinary cat food, but actual owners prefer to give it a special mix that includes a bit of raw meat.

This breed is a very active breed and more suited for more active owners. It is naturally curious of its surroundings and anything it comes in contact with. Due to this it can get into trouble sometimes.

As for temperament, when it is properly socialized, results can be quite remarkable. Many will say that this is the feline version of the dog, it is immediately loyal to family members and wary of strangers. It is prone to pouting when left out and learn simple to complex commands. It is also a cat that is quite long lived that can live up to 20 years given proper care.
