Important Tips On Dog Training In Pa

By Kate McMahon

There are many people that are so fond of dogs they cannot imagine life without them. These animals are adored and admired for their unconditional affection, loyalty and zest in life. That notwithstanding, human beings and dogs differ in several ways. Maintaining a cordial relationship with dogs is essential, and this can be achieved by training them on desirable behaviors. Dog training in pa is easily achieved if the right methods are used.

The method of training notwithstanding, effective training of dogs comes down to one thing- controlling the consequences of their behavior. There are two very important things to consider in influencing how they behave. The first is to reward desirable behaviors. Secondly, any behaviors that are undesirable must not be rewarded. This is what is known as reward based learning. The lack of reward is not necessarily punishment.

Training a dog is only made possible after one understands how they learn. Dogs, contrary to what most people believe, are very good listeners and learners. However, they are animals and thus one should not expect them to be very sharp. They need some time to grasp certain ideas clearly.

By understanding their mode of learning, clarity and consistency are assured. Usually, they tend to better learn when their behavior is instantly rewarded or rebuked. And what is more, the nature of such consequences greatly determine their future behavior. Just like humans, dogs will always look to get good things and avoid those that come with unpleasant outcomes. This explains why reward based learning comes out as one of the best ways to teach them.

On the same note, consequences for behavior that is undesirable must be instant. This is because unlike human beings, dogs live in the present and would not easily differentiate experiences that are separated in time. This is just like good behavior that is rewarded immediately. The advantage of this form of reward and lack of it is that the dog easily remembers what is required of them. For purposes of uniformity and consistency, every family member should take part in this form of training.

For effective teaching of new skills, the training sessions need to be short and enjoyable. Dogs, just like young children, do not have long attention spans. The average session should be approximately 15 minutes long. Within that time one can either work on a single skill or switch between a few different skills. Preferably, things can be kept more interesting by doing 5 to 15 repetitions.

The body language of dogs, and especially so their ears and eyes, is very important. The way they tilt their heads, move their legs and wag their tails all indicate their impulses and emotions as well. They are helpful in sending across what the dogs want. In addition to this, masters need to be able to interpret their various noises and barks. In this way, they will know when the dog is happy, sad or displeased.

For those that are considering dog training in pa, patience is crucial. With patience, every dog is able to achieve so much. All of them have differing levels of understanding and the sooner masters understand that, the better and effective the training will be.
