About Sable Sheltie Puppies For Sale

By Christopher Stone

Shetland sheepdog is probably one of the most popular breeds. This lovely, affectionate and loyal dog is really special creature, and his characteristic appearance makes him recognizable all over the world. These lovely dogs come in different color variations, and, thanks to their popularity, you will probably find Sable Sheltie puppies for sale somewhere near to your home.

So, as it was said, there are two basic coat colors, but three different basic color variations, Sable, bicolor and tricolor. The first one has recognizable red, reddish brown, golden or mahogany coat with black overcoat, bicolor has black coat, and tricolor comes in different color variations of two basic colors and white. It might be confusing, because they all have white areas. Every dog carries two color genes.

One separate gene is called Merle, and it is independent from those two basic color genes. Carriers of a Merle gene have patterned coats and sometimes blue eyes. It's not allowed to combine two Merle carriers together, because the puppies are often born blind and with hearing problems. Merle gene is quite obvious when puppies are still young, but it might be hard to visually determine this gene when the dog is older.

Sables can be light red, golden or dark, mahogany red, almost black. Anyway, this particular color variety is probably the most popular one. Young puppies have less white on their bodies, but it will change when they become older. Both males and females will be up to 41 cm in height, and up to 12 kg in weight, although they might look larger, thanks to their feathered coats.

Thanks to their long feathered coats, these dogs are really attractive, but grooming is not so easy. To avoid mats, you have to comb and brush your dog regularly, especially in those periods of more excessive shedding, when they change their summer and winter hair. Most owners also trim their private parts to ease the hygiene.

Most purebreds have several well known health issues. Good breeders mostly issue health certificate for their puppies, and this could be the best way to make sure they probably won't have problems with genetic diseases. Even so, finding a good vet is something you have to do, for regular vaccinations and checkups.

As it was said before, this is a very special dog. He is sensitive, gentle and intelligent, alert, active and responsive. He has to be well socialized early and requires calm and gentle owner and peaceful living environment. He will not react very well to loud noises, yelling, or anything too exciting. He might bark extensively in strange situations.

Clever, responsive and interested in learning, Sheltie is just perfect for large families and gentle owners who appreciate peace and quiet life. Toddlers are often too loud and too much for any dog, and might scare him. He won't become aggressive or something, but might bark or become nervous. Loyal and nice to all people, but still alert and playful, this really is one unique dog, a friend for life.
