This Is What One Should Know About Savannah Kittens And Cats

By Walter Campbell

Cross breeding a serval and a domestic will result in Savannah cats. Body size and size of ears is determined by genes of parent cats. In the 19s they gained popularity among breeders which led to their acceptance and registration as a separate breed. History has it that a female Siamese and male Serval were crossbred to give birth to the first breed of Savannah kittens.

Features of crossbred cats greatly determine the features passed on to kittens. A unique feature with them is that they are tall and slim. This gives the illusion of great size. With this illusion in mind one would also expect more on weight. More Serval traits and looks are maintained besides size. Generation lines greatly determine size. Kittens born in the first generation are big. This is influenced by strong genes of the parents.

Chausie and Bengal kittens join Savannah in the line of hybrid cats. The three have looks of Serval which disappear with each generation. Male savannahs are visibly bigger than females. They have a spotted coat which is also a very distinctive feature. This feature is contributed by crossbred male Serval. The pattern is non-standard and colored.

A litter may adorn a wide range of colors. They could range from snow, rosette, marble, blue, chocolate to cinnamon among several others. Desired and non-desirable traits in them were set by the first breed. Ten years down the line it was observed by breeders that certain traits were missing. To ensure desired traits were realized they resorted to crossbreeding resultant kittens.

Their exotic look is due to the presence of many distinguishing serval characteristics. When in search for Savannah cat some distinguishing features separate them from other hybrids. They have unique color markings, are tall, with rounded, deeply cupped, and erect ears. Long legs, puffy noses and hooded eyes further separate then from the rest. It has a distinct gait. When standing straight hind quarters are raised higher than the shoulders.

Their eyes are boomerang shaped and colored blue, brown, green, gold or a little mixed shade as they mature to adulthood. They have a small tall and long slim neck. Their neck at the back has a central light band surrounded by black, brown colored or dark grey that depicts an eye like effect. They have a fairly short tail with black rings and pure black tip.

The temperamental nature of these cats is one of the best thing about them. Loyalty comes second on the list as demonstrated in how they tend to be next to their owners all the time. With proper training they can be used to fetch items. People who have had them before attest to the fact that they are friendly and social to strangers. When not trained at an early age to interact with people they will run and hide at the presence of new people.

The jumping ability of savannah cats cannot be compared to that of any other felines. Expect to find them on top of cabinets, wardrobes and refrigerators. Feline family is known for its water phobia but these ones are an exception. Their love for water leads them to play with it as well as immersing their bodies fully in it. A unique character with them is that they are always fluffing their tails when meeting a new person.
