Preparations For A Field Trial

By Greg Poole

Every person must have at one point or another come across an advertisement for field tests. Most of them however wonder if their dogs are qualified for these competitions because there are a number of different kinds. Most of the huge championships take place at Ames plantation and many people say that this place is very good for spending family time. The types of dogs that participate in the field trial are called the hunting dogs.

Before dogs can be allowed to participate in these competitions, there are certain breeding aspects that are usually used on them so as to make them fit for the trials. The trainers usually test some traits in them before allowing them to participate as hunting dogs. The dogs that are declared best are usually given this title based on their performance at the trial. Nonetheless, many people think that some dogs just seem to be the best because their breed is the most dominant which gives them better odds.

For example, the number of Labradors that usually compete in any trial is usually larger than that of any other breed. Does this mean that the Labradors are really that dominant or they just have an advantage because of the large numbers? However, it is more realistic to say that popularity of a certain dog is brought about by its success and not the number of its kind that participated in the field test.

Every February of every year has two weeks specifically set for the most popular field test championships across the globe. This is an event that brings together different pointers and setters in one place, always the Ames plantation for a very historic event. This is usually the national competition where dogs from different states participate.

This competition is usually so hard since only the finest dogs compete. For one to be eligible they should have at least attained first position in two of the qualifying competitions that are normally set before the main contest. Those who have participated before are however permitted to join with at least second or third place in the qualifiers.

These animals are usually judged based on the type of stamina they show at the event and also the number of birds they manage to point. Usually, the dogs are tested for endurance too and also the way they handle the hunting. For instance, they check if they point first to avoid bumping birds.

An example of the most competent dogs in these championships is the Shadow Oak Bo. This is a male setter and it has managed to win twice in one hundred years of the event. Only two types of dogs have managed this, the only other one being the Red Water Rex. In the 2014 Ames plantation championships, this dog made history by winning after 43 years of waiting for a setter. Many say that it is the best dog to have ever participated in the championships.

Many people who have previously participated can confirm that it is one of the best outdoor activities to ever be invented. The judges that work at this event are usually very good and they make certain that each dog is given the best mark they deserve after 180 minutes on the spotlight.
