Steps On How To Do An Aquarium Maintenance

By Young Lindsay

Having the aquarium maintained would save a lot of expenses in making sure it is still up and running. Having it thoroughly checked as well would in intervals of time would make sure that the fishes are healthy and the tank is clean. Being able to maintain this is easy in just a few steps and preparations and it only takes thirty minutes every two weeks.

The stability of the tank is a factor for the maintenance of the whole aquarium. Everything must be working fine and nothing out of place or broken, to ensure the safety and healthy of the aquatic pets inside it. Aquarium maintenance Cincinnati is done by close observation and attention towards this.

As for the water and replacement, it should be done every two weeks. There are certain changes in the composition or solution of the water and this should be monitored. The environment of the tank would end up changing as well depending on the quality of the water. Replace about fifteen percent of the water and if there is any sick fish in the tank, replace about half of it.

Now, the water you replace with should be clean and fresh. Tap water may have chlorine and ammonia present in it, and even if you use a water conditioner, the ammonia would still be there. There are also hard metals present in the water like iron and phosphates. Check with your local water provider to see the composition of the water in your area.

Take note, lukewarm water is still too warm for the fishes. Use a thermometer to take the temperature and see if it is already good enough before pouring it in. In Cincinnati OH, the ideal temperature for tropical fishes is about seventy two to eighty degrees Fahrenheit with an optimal temperature of seventy eight degrees. As for common goldfishes, it would be from sixty five to sixty eight Fahrenheit, and for fancy tailed ones, it could be up to seventy two degrees.

Use a siphon to take out the old water and a water vacuum to filter out the gravel and other decorations inside the tank. Make use of an unused stocking on the vacuum if ever there are tiny fishes in the tank, and also an unused bristle brush to scrub the decorations. These decorations should also be cleaned since algae may still form on the crevices and surfaces.

Try to look at the water for a while and see if the cloudiness would go away or not. If not, there are treatments available in the market, but it does not solve the main issue and ends up covering it instead. Make sure that there is a gap of air at the top of the water in the tank for the fishes to have room for their upper fins.

The equipment and walls outside should also be cleaned and this includes the light, the hood, and the top portion of the tank. Detergents should not be used since they have ammonia fumes in it and will be bad for the fishes. Other cleaning products are available that is specially made for cleaning aquariums.

Every month, the filter cartridge should be changed. The buildup of carbon would make the fishes get higher risks of dying or getting sick. There are beneficial types of bacteria that stay in the gravel more than on the cartridge, so nothing to worry about removing them on the cartridge since it would not affect the environment of the tank that much.
