Assisi Animal Health: A Dog's Most Common Behaviors

By Robin Setser

When you become a new dog owner, chances are that you will start to see common patterns in your dog's behaviors. They aren't ones that necessarily indicate any discomfort or pain, though, so it's important to keep your mind at ease. More than anything else, the behaviors in question are ones which dogs go about on a typical basis, which Assisi Animal Health can attest to as well. Here are just a few of the most common behaviors for you, as a pet owner, to stay aware of.

When you think about common dog behaviors, barking should immediately come to mind. Barking can be done for various reasons, whether it's alerting the owner of a stranger on their property or a small animal scurrying along without a care in the world. As a pet owner, you must react to your dog accordingly. Whether it's a matter of praise or punishment, on your end, barking must be addressed with the appropriate reaction in place.

Whining can also be done by dogs, though it's important to keep in mind that this can be taken advantage of. If the whining in question is done because of the need for food, it should be rewarded since this has brought such an important point to your attention. However, it's crucial to focus on how whining may also be done for the purpose of, possibly, bringing your dog more attention for no reason whatsoever. You, as a pet owner, must address this well.

What happens when your dog stops whatever they are doing to stare at you? Assisi Animal Health will be able to tell you that your dog looks to you as their caretaker, seeing as how you are not only able to provide shelter but the food and physical activity they require to have the highest quality of life. When a dog looks at you, for extended lengths of time, chances are that they desire something from you. Whether it's a walk or a treat, you'll start to better understand your dog's needs in time.

As you can see, there are many behaviors, associated with dogs, that are rather common. They aren't even ones we notice; more than anything else, we simply see them as run-of-the-mill, or as normal as can be expected. However, with these points in mind, hopefully you will start to see what these behaviors are all about. As a result, you may find yourself becoming a much better pet owner over the course of time.
