A Brief Primer On The Frenchie Dog

By Margaret Green

One experience worth having in this lifetime is to have a pet and to look after it. Many have taken to animal companionship as against human companionship and not regretted it. In fact some of your friends may have urged you to get a frenchie dog to give you company while you are in Ohio. It is however a good idea to finish off this article first before you go out and buy one.

The term frenchie is what is given to the French bulldog, which is a breed that has been around since the ancient Greek times. Its main role was to fight bulls in the arena in the blood sport of bull baiting which became popular throughout the Mediterranean. It was widely distributed by Phoenician traders and these same dogs later on became pets when bull baiting was made illegal.

Due to its playfulness and also adaptable personality, this breed has become the sixth most popular dog according to data from the American Kennel Club. It is quite the attention monger and will demand one thousand and one percent of your attention. If it somehow made to feel that it is not attention worthy, it will let out a ululating and eerie sound which many frenchie owners have dubbed as the French death yodel. The females of the species it should be noted, are very protective of their young or anything or anyone that they may care about.

The dog is rated as a medium level in terms of energy, but it can be quite happy as well not moving for extended periods of time. Thus this ability to also be fairly inactive is a boon for city dwellers wherein it can adapt very well to small home living in apartments and urban condominiums. It still should be given at least thirty minutes of walking daily so that it can release extra energy and also to give itself a stretch.

It is fairly similar to the English bulldog in that they have the same mastiff ancestry, they differ in size and looks. They are smaller and more robust in terms of a wider girth, and have eternally erect ears. They do not share the same aggressive nature as the English bulldog, and thus can be safely kept with small children and other animals.

Health complications will become apparent as it ages, noticeably as it starts with the eyes as it forms cataracts. It is also a dog that has problems regulating its internal body temperature due to its pug nose and smaller airway, thus it is not advisable to bring this dog to places of extreme temperatures like those in tropical or very cold climates.

Eight to ten years will be the expected average lifespan for this breed, which is not really very long. Thus do consult with your veterinarian a list of best practices, which can include nutrition, that you must practice so that it may live a bit longer.

In sum this article has given some pertinent information on this dog breed for you to mull on. Remember to also gather more information from other sources so that you can come at a more informed decision on making this commitment to get a pet.
