Learn More About Owning Adorable Cavachon Pups

By Raymond Brooks

Dogs are perfect companions who love without condition, are always entertaining, great comforters, and are forever loyal. Once one has decided to take a pet into their home, it is best to always pick one who has grooming needs, general behavioral traits, health conditions, activity levels, and grooming needs that are compatible with their living situation and lifestyle. Cavachon pups are an adorable designer breed which has very attractive qualities and is adaptable to most circumstances.

Created my mixing a pure specimen of each of the Toy breeds, Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these dogs are quite rare and difficult to breed. Acceptable results are often achieved when mating two first generation Cavachons but some of the more desirable qualities may be diminished when breeding subsequent generations. As a mixed breed, most major or national kennel clubs do not recognize them and have not set any official authoritative standards for them.

At approximately thirteen inches in height and weighing roughly eighteen pounds fully grown, this breed is rather small. They come in a range of colors though primarily the are various shades of peach, brown, and white. Listed as hypoallergenic, their coats are curly or slightly wavy, thick, soft, and silky, shed only minimally and produce practically no dander.

Their average lifespan is about 15-20 years and with regular checkups and proper care, they should remain relatively healthy. They are prone to issues typical of small dog breeds such as flea allergies, heart murmurs, and eye ulcerations caused by their hair getting into their eyes. Their ears need to be cleaned weekly because fur grows in them which can lead to infections.

Cavachons are social, intelligent, affectionate, gentle, friendly, and though energetic, they are not hyperactive. These dogs are generally well behaved while indoors but daily walks or a bit of playtime will help them get rid of excess energy. They are happiest when around other household pets or people, and tend to form very profound bonds with their humans.

The upkeep and maintenance of this particular breed can be rather time consuming. They do not shed much but their fur is thick, wavy or curly and has a tendency to become badly matted. If a person is not willing to take the time to thoroughly brush their pet's coat on a daily basis, the costs of required trips to a professional groomer could grow significant.

This breed is quite intelligent and the dogs have an ability to learn relatively fast when lessons are consistent. Both their behavioral conditioning and their socialization need to start while very young so that negative habits do not have a chance to form. When obedience training starts as a puppy, the results are likely to be more impressive.

Those who travel a lot or use recreational vehicles, suffer from dander allergies, or have small homes or apartments, might find Cavachons to be a great option. These dogs are very social and bond well with other pets, children, and older individuals. Although a small breed, they can provide a great amount of companionship and comfort, endless love, and infinite loyalty.
