More Information About Old English Sheepdog

Sheep can be herded by dogs. Breeds of canines that are used for this purpose are known as sheepdog. Many breeds including Old English, Maremma, Polish Lowland, Cumberland, and Border Collie are examples of sheepdog. Others include Croatian, Hungarian Puli, Shetland, Tornjak and Icelandic. Old English sheepdog breed will be tackled in this article.

This breed of dog has a large size with an athletic posture and a unique shaggy coat. In the past farmers used these dogs to drive their cattle around. Nowadays these dogs are used as pets as compared to their original duty in the past. They stay in comfortable homes but are occasionally used in herding, obedience, agility and conformation trials.

Character-wise, these dogs are very playful. Puppies enjoy playing with small kids, pets, and other dogs. Their playful nature usually make the age od adolescence to extend into three years. Even after they grow beyond adolescence, adults still remain playful all their lives. Because of this sort of temperament, these dogs coexist with other pets and dogs and can be raised in homes without any worry.

Their puppies have the ability to learn faster. In general, this is an intelligent breed of dogs that can learn a trick or skill without straining. They always try to find something to keep them busy and they are able to do different exercises both mental and physical. The exercise may include search and rescue, obedience, agility and herding.

The playful nature of these dogs also dictate that should be given a lot of mental and physical exercise. Puppies and fully grown dogs need to be walked and exercised daily. One should avoid leaving the dogs alone and lonely. Human companion is very vital to the proper development of the pups.

Puppies grow into kind adults with proper nurturing and sufficient care. One thing is that they make good companions to kids and good family dogs. Despite, the good traits they should not be confused for excellent watchdogs. This is because they are too social to the extent that they rarely bark to strangers. But there are instances when they become quite protective of their owners against intruders.

Old English Sheepdogs are mostly active when they are young. They can get destructive if their energy is not controlled in the right manner. The dog will release energy by running around the house and chewing on the furniture or any other item they will encounter. It is the responsibility of an individual to find the recommended and legal ways of exercising the dog and keep it busy.

The canines have thick coats which make it necessary to ensure they are kept cool. Only exercise with them when the weather is cool and not when it is hot. Proper behavior including obedience should be instilled in them are a young age through training. Hire a licensed dog trainer to walk them through obedience training. When experienced enough then obedience training can be done by the dog owner without assistance.
