Tips For Finding Ethical And Responsible AKC Lab Breeders

By Jose Wilson

If you want to introduce a new pet into your household, you can find one in a lot of different ways. You can answer a newspaper ad placed by private individuals, visit a shelter, accept one as a gift from a friend, or buy a thorough bred dog from a breeder. If you have set your heart on a purebred Labrador, for example, you will have to research reputable AKC lab breeders.

The American Kennel Club website is one of the easiest ways to get information about specific breeds. On this site, you can research animal traits and characteristics, join clubs, and find out what special events are planned in your area. You will no find recommendations for individual breeders however. The kennel club doesn't provide that. The site does have links to help you find what you need.

Not all professionals who breed dogs are in the business full time. If you have to leave a message to have a call returned, you shouldn't be too concerned that you are contacting an unreliable breeder. You certainly don't want to conduct the whole transaction over the phone or by email. You need to visit the breeder's home and kennel. This is the only way to know the conditions puppies are living in.

When you visit the kennels, you should feel comfortable with the breeder and welcome to tour the facilities. If that isn't the case, and the breeder isn't eager to let you see their operation, you need to consider backing out of the sale. You should pay attention to the way the breeder and the dogs interact. Puppies should be energetic, friendly and happy.

Any reputable breeder is going to be something of an expert on the dogs she handles. It's not unusual for purebred dogs to inherit diseases and health conditions. If you haven't already researched this information, you need to ask the breeder about it, and about the genetic background of the puppy you are interested in. You can also ask if the parents are available for you to see.

A good breeder will be as concerned about your credentials as you are about hers. You might be asked to sign a contract with line items that include the breeder having the right to reclaim the puppy if you can't take care of it or don't take care of it properly. Ethical breeders love the puppies they raise and want the best for them.

The AKC inspects kennel facilities throughout the year. If you want to make sure a breeder you are working with is a member in good standing with the club, you can find all the information on the club's website. When an inspector has concerns about the quality of a kennel, the owner may be fined or lose club privileges. Egregious deficiencies will result in a call to law enforcement.

Introducing a puppy into a family unit should be fun, challenging, and rewarding. Starting off on the right foot is essential. Before you ever bring a dog home, you need to make sure the breeder isn't hiding a puppy mill behind a bogus AKC certification. In case you do find this, contacting the club immediately is critical.
