By Lucille Lamb

Labrador Retrievers are famous for their pleasant temperament and high intelligence. These large majestic dogs are a popular choice as both a family pet and a service animal for police and search work, and guiding the blind. If considering adopting Lab puppies for sale California dog owners must first be aware of what this breed needs to be healthy and happy.

The Lab originates in Newfoundland, Canada and dates back to the 1800's. The first Labs were used to help fishermen. Over time they were bred with other Retrievers, Spaniels, and Setters and further evolved into a hunting dog, which they are still used for today.

There are both English and American Labrador Retrievers. The latter are tall and lean, whereas the former are more heavy and stocky in build. A Lab's coat is short but thick and grows as a double-coat. Their color can be yellow, black, or chocolate, and sometimes a rare shade of silver. They typically measure about 21-24 in height and weight between 60 and 80 pounds, most males are bigger in both ways than females.

This dog loves humans of all ages and thrive on receiving attention from them. Labs make wonderful companions for children and also get along well with other animals. The American breed tends to be more excitable than their calmer English counterparts. They are very smart and easy to train, but must be taught early to heel or they can be challenging to control outdoors.

Labradors need a substantial amount of daily exercise or they will become bored and may get into mischief. Long, energetic walks are ideal, as long as the human leads instead of the dog. Dog owners who have a swimming pool may also let the dog join in and paddle around the water, as Labs are natural swimmers. Games which involve retrieving activities are another favorite of these playful dogs.

Labs can easily become overweight, so over-feeding must be avoided. They should be screened for disorders this breed is prone to such as cataracts, hip and elbow dysplasia, mast cell tumors, and gastric torsion. If they receive medical attention and overall good care, they can live as long as 10-12 years.

A Labrador Retriever has basic grooming needs, which consist of bathing as necessary and regular brushing. The double-layered coat has a coarse top layer and a soft layer underneath that should be brushed every day to eliminate loose hair from the dog's body, since Labs are fairly heavy shedders.

A litter usually consists of six to eight pups which will be ready to go to new homes as early as eight weeks of age. This way the breeder can get a good idea of each dog's personality and match them with the best owners. When looking to adopt Lab puppies for sale California dog lovers should also ensure that they were raised in a clean environment and that the parents are free of any genetic health conditions.
