How To Safely Tow A Trailer

By Robbie Whiteman

The most cost effective way of moving is just to tow your household items on your own. However, many people do not always explore this option despite the fact that it is the cheapest due to lack of knowledge on safe towing of a trailer. It is also advisable not to try caravan hauling if you are not comfortable with it as you may end up causing accident. Here are a few guidelines for safe towing.

You should never tow after heavy rains. You can be rest assured that the road is going to be slippery after the rains and controlling the heavy load is going to be a problem. So if possible, schedule all your hauling needs in summer. No matter the load you are hauling, it is going to be easy when the road is not slippery.

You should also understand the pulling capacity of your car or pickup. The law always allows you to tow up to 1.5 times the kerb mass of your pickup. However, some cars do not have the capacity to pull this maximum allowed mass. So you should check the manufacturers recommended pulling mass. This will also ensure that you do not over work your car or pickup depending on the one you use.

When negotiating corners, you must also be mindful of the extra length behind. Always take wide corners. This will help avoid potential collision with the with the electricity poles and with building that are built too close to the road.

While hauling, it is inevitable that you will be driving at a reduced speed. This means that there will be a traffic jam behind. So if you sense this, it would be better to give the motorists room to overtake. If there is a climbing lane in that road, you can use it to minimize causing jam. In some places, there are lanes meant for heavy vehicles like trailers, you can also use this lane.

Most towing accidents are those that can be prevented by simply ensuring that the caravan is in good condition. Ensure that all its tyres are still good. Your car must also have head lamps before you start hauling at night.

The above are some of the most important tips for safe towing of a trailer or goosenecks for sale. You should also not venture into long distance hauling if you are not used to it. Start with short distance and you can increase this after some time. This will help avoid fatigue which may lead to accidents.
