The correct size should be enough to let him sit, lie and comfortably turn around. It should also have 3 - 4 inches of head room added when it is sitting and standing.

Finding this size is very simple. Measure from the floor to the top of his shoulder and add about 4 inches. This gives you the height. Measure from the head to the base of his tail and add another 4 inches. This gives you the length. Measure from the ears to the back legs and add about 2 inches. This gives you the width of your travel crate.

Find a good pet store to look at different model boxes they have and the various price differences. Always remember this is one of the few times where bigger can be better. If your pet dog is a little too small you could always use a box divider to make it a little more comfortable for him.

There are special wire crates people can use which can be folded flat for simple storage under a bed or in a closet when not being used. Most travel crates can be useful with assisting to reduce the anxiety in most pets while they are alone. Just ensure they have enough water and food while you are away.

There has been a new trend for the big airlines to let some people bring on their soft sided dog boxes as a carry on to slip under the seat. It is often best to always call ahead to ensure your airline allows for this. Until some new things comes up, these travel crates are a dogs best friend.
