Those who are looking for an affectionate, mild-mannered, loyal family pet may want to consider getting an Australian Labradoodle. This breed is not only very intelligent and a popular choice for service and guide dogs but some types are also non-shedding and hypo-allergenic. Before visiting breeders of Australian Labradoodle puppies North Carolina buyers should ensure that they have what it takes to meet the needs this dog has.

The first Australian Labradoodles were seen in the 1980's when a Labrador Retriever was bred with either a Standard or Miniature Poodle. Over time, other breeds of dog including the Curly Coat Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, and English and American Cocker Spaniel were introduced into this crossbreed's gene pool to produce a dog with the desirable characteristics of each breed.

They have a medium bone-structure and can be standard or miniature, measuring 17 to 24 inches in height and weighing 30 to 75 pounds. Depending on the type of fur it has, some of this breed do not shed. Their coats can be of a curly or wavy texture and be either a solid color or combination of any shade including cream, tan, black, chalk, silver, gold, chocolate, apricot, red, and apricot cream.

When the puppy is about ten to fifteen months of age, its coat will begin to change into an adult one. Puppies that shed will naturally lose this coat, but those that don't shed will need to visit the groomer to have it stripped. Regular trimming is needed two or three times annually and they should be brushed weekly. They are a low-odor dog and don't need to be bathed often, although they do need their ears cleaned once a week to prevent infections.

As a highly intelligent breed, these dogs are quite easy to train. They are non-aggressive and make great companions for children and also get along well with other dogs. This breed is known for its highly developed sense of connectedness to humans and it is very sensitive to its owner's emotions. Owners must firmly but gently assert themselves as the dog's pack leader, or it will quickly learn to outsmart them.

Australian Labradoodles are an energetic and playful dog which fairs best with a lot of daily exercise. Playing games of fetch and running about a fenced yard are acceptable, but they also need several walks each day. They love water, and will also enjoy swimming in a pool with their owners.

This breed is overall a healthy one that may live up to 16 years of age. However, as with any type of dog there are some potential health issues, namely a proneness to hip and elbow dysplasia which breeders must routinely screen their breeding stock for. They are also a floppy-eared breed which means their ears need to be kept clean and free of hair as to reduce the chance of infections.

Before making the decision to adopt Australian Labradoodle puppies North Carolina dog lovers need to know for sure that they are willing to commit the time and attention necessary to properly raise this smart and loving dog. This breed is one which needs lots of mental and physical stimulation every day to remain comfortable and happy.
