Facts About Pigs & Pig Farming

By Lianne Derocco

Among the food and meat related industries in the United States, the pork industry is one of the most profitable. The farms can range from the small and independent ones raising only a few pigs a year to the huge commercial farms, and these are reasons why millions of pigs can be raised each year for the consumption of people in the country.

In the whole world, there can be about a billion live pigs at any time, and this can make pigs one of the most in numbers in the mammal world of today. The majority of these pigs may be raised in the farms, but there can also be millions of these swine roaming in the wild, and this can be all over the world. These wild pigs can be roaming wild and can be found in North America and also all over Europe and Asia.

Food for these pigs is carefully controlled in the farms but they are also omnivorous animals, which mean that they are also the "all eaters" or they eat plants, animals, or algae and others. In the farms, their typical food sources are corn and soybean meals. In the wild however, they are having their meals on grasses, leaves, roots, fruits, and other food they can forage. Because wild pigs are excellent in foraging, they can also teach people how to find and dig wild potatoes.

In the world, there are currently about 10 various types of species of swine identified. The domesticated pigs, a part of this species, are primarily the most common. There are many products that can be made from the pigs, and these are not consumed by people, although pigs are raised primarily for food. Paint brushes, for example, can be made from pig hair. Nearly two dozens of different drugs are also produced from various hog parts. Pig heart valves are nearly similar to those with people, and mainly the reason that heart valves of pigs can be used in humans.

Swine farming can be very profitable to people and also a good food source for human consumption, but a good deal of waste is also produced in the farms. Dealing with the waste produced is a big chore, and many problems can be encountered with the waste contained in the lagoons and pits. Crusting on the top of these waste pits and thick sludge formed on the bottom can be problems faced with these wastes.

Using an agricultural waste product such as Agra Sphere can be a natural way to reduce problems such as crusting and sludge. These biodegradable spheres contain natural bacteria which eats away at waste solids, keeping the waste in your pit or lagoon as liquid as possible. This manure treatment product also reduces pit foaming and the odors around your waste containment system.
