Researching Royal Standard Poodle Breeders

By Miranda Sweeney

Searching for a new pet, especially when considering a pure bred animal, may require a bit of research to make sure that the individual finds a breed compatible with their current living situation. The dog should have a temperament, health and grooming needs that are within one's comfort zone. Those who love larger, affectionate dogs but have some allergy problems may want to speak to royal standard poodle breeders.

As a breed in general, poodles are highly desired dogs who have a regal and respected history. Though their origin can not be definitively pinpointed, the AKC attributes them a German heritage. They have multiple positive aspects that make them skilled hunting hounds, talented performers, wonderful playmates and fantastic house pets.

According to the AKC, toy, miniature and standards are the only three officially recognized categories for this breed. The term, Royals, is an unofficial title given to those who are uncommonly excessive in height and weight, while teacup refers to those who are extremely small. Those on the extreme ends of the scale are at a higher risk for health issues involving their hearts, bones strength and hip displacement.

Royals can stand about thirty inches high at the withers and weigh in excess of eighty pounds when full grown. On average, a healthy dog of this type lives to be twelve years old, or older. Their appearance is one of aristocratic beauty and its distinctive shape is easily recognized by people all around the world.

Excluding the legs, neck and skull, this breed has a squared off appearance when placed in showing stance, as the body has the same measurements for both height and length. The head is roundish, featuring beautiful and very dark oval shaped eyes set in a wide stance, as well as a muzzle that is long and tapered. The ears tend to hang loosely at the sides and are flat and silky.

Unlike many other breeds whose legs tend to be either very long or really short, poodles have appendages that are directly proportionate to the size of their bodies. The line of their backs are very straight and level, showing no dips, slopes or arches as commonly found in other dogs. The tails are very stiff and are held upright like a flag at all times.

Poodles have a distinctive curly style coat that is easily identifiable and almost always a solid color. Their amazing fur is actually more like hair as in it constantly grows and does not shed. This makes them very clean indoor pets and perfect for allergy sufferers, but it also means they will require regular grooming.

This breed has been touted as one of the most highly intelligent ones partly because they have the amazing ability to understand a lot more words than other dogs, and they are easily trained. As long as they get regular exercise, they tend to be well behaved and their calm disposition makes them amiable with adults, children and other canines. They view their owners as pack members and show incredible loyalty, devotion and affection.
