Veterinarians refer to animal professionals whose work involves diagnosing and treating diseases and dysfunctions in animals. Part of the job involves researching medical conditions that affect livestock, pets, and even wild animals. People working as vets are exposed to many risks. Working with frightened, injured or animals in pain can result in the vet being scratched, bitten or kicked. Animals also contract deadly viral diseases like rabies among others. Attempts to treat or vaccinate such animals only serve to expose the vet to the risk of contracting the infection.

Vets work for several hours in a day, one of the longest hours. One will also have their weekends, nights, and holidays interrupted regularly so that they can attend to emergency situations. It is not uncommon to come across a vet who works for over 50 hours in a week.

There are specific academic requirements that one must achieve in order to work as a vet. The most important is to attain a doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine. The degree must be attained from an accredited academic institution. A state license is also mandatory before one can start working as a vet in any country worldwide.
