Before you do make a commitment and buy one, do read on in this article for a few facts and tips about the said breed.

Most if not all of the prominent dog societies in the world will classify this particular breed as one belonging to the herding class. The herding behavior which this dog will exhibit will come out sometimes when around other pets and animals, where they will try to herd them into one place or group by pushing, circling and even nipping at times. However, as most dogs of this breed are made for show purposes, this behavior gets less apparent as generations progress.

A lot of people mistakenly think that this dog can be used as a guard dog. In fact nothing can be farther from the truth as these dogs are quite calm by nature and will be skittish and timid towards strangers. Many people think they are good guard dogs just because of their deep and resounding bark, which of course is a first deterrent used by guard dogs.

This is a breed that is also very playful and quite rambunctious when they are still young. And given their level of activity and size, it is recommended that they have a bit of space to romp around in. Due to this they are not really fit for small house living at all. They will also need a daily regular walk and exercise for at least an hour.

This dog is also known to show alpha dog tendencies when it is allowed to, thus making it a bit stubborn and hard to control. Thus its owner should also exhibit lots of confidence and a strong personality for this dog to follow orders. If its prospective owner lack these traits, it will be very hard to control.

The fur of the old English sheepdog is characterized as one that is quite long and shaggy also. Due to this it will require a lot of grooming and clipping regularly. This dog is one that drools profusely and so when its fur under the chin and mouth area gets wet, debris and foreign matter will tend to stick to it. It is also a dog that also likes to fart a lot.

Most if not a majority of the health complications that this breed will encounter will be related to its shaggy fur. They will experience temperature regulation problems and so the fur must be kept short during the hot season or summer months. Likewise the fur around its eyes should be trimmed short so as not to irritate and infect the eyes.

Expect this breed to live on a average about ten to twelve years, which is not really that long considering its big size. Regular checkups with the vet, as well as a good diet, will extend the lifespan somewhat as well as extra doses of love and care.
