Important Tips On Aquarium Maintenance Cincinnati

By Timothy Gibson

The most important aspect of ensuring fish in aquariums are kept healthy is to ensure the tank is in good condition. There are regular maintenance practices that are very important and will keep fish safe. One of the biggest challenges for people that own aquariums is not being certain of how to maintain them. In considering aquarium maintenance Cincinnati residents should ensure the tanks are well taken care of. Whereas experts disagree on practices involved, there are those that are standard.

Many people that do not bother about maintenance do so thinking that they already have filters. It could also be that bottom feeding fish will be picking up stuff from there. Filters are definitely useful but they too will become clogged over time, causing more harm than good. Also, fish continue production of wastes which needs to be removed over time. This, in addition to the fact that uneaten food decays slowly, means aquariums have to be maintained.

The frequency with which maintenance is done will need to be considered too. All aspects involved in maintenance cannot be done every week or daily. Cleaning of colony rich sections needs to be very restricted so that there is reduced impact on useful bacteria. The areas include among others substrate and filters. If bacterial colonies are disturbed excessively, the nitrogen cycle will be disturbed. Water needs to get tested some days after you do significant cleaning.

When it comes to daily practices of maintaining aquariums, it mostly involves visual inspection. Filters should be checked to ensure they are running effectively. Regarding temperature, it needs to be confirmed that it is in the range that is expected. There should be counting of fish and checking that they are generally doing well. Counting is best done when they are getting fed. It is also at this time that you can check the uneaten foods.

Weekly and bi-weekly checks are also crucial. There should be partial water changes every week. Water that is used should be treated and possibly aged. The water for replacement should be close to temperature of the tank. Before water changes however, other weekly tasks should be carried out first. Partial water change should be the last task.

Testing of water in fish tanks should be done every month. It involves test for such aspects as nitrites, pH, nitrates and ammonia. In case of problems with the algae, you may need to test for phosphates just in case they are part of the problem. Testing for water is done before you change water and also before other activities of maintenance are carried out.

There are periodic practices that are not done frequently. One of them is replacement of bulbs which is done yearly whether or not the existing ones have burned out. Also, there needs to be inspection of filter tubing and air pump tubing. In case there are live plants, they are supposed to be fertilized.

You will not require a lot of equipment for purposes of cleaning aquariums. You will however benefit from having some useful tools. One of the most important is a dedicated bucket. Also necessary will be an algae scrubber, siphon and water conditioner.
