The Steps To Take For Canary Breeding

By Bernice Terry

The whole process of canary breeding may take a certain amount of advanced planning. This would include preparing any specialized equipment and some specific foods for the birds to eat among others. Note that there are a few things to be said about canaries. For one thing, they are not social.

For some that can be a difficult concept to grasp. When people think about birds, they do not picture violence and yet that is what you get with this kind. They often hurt each other, even as mates, so it would be wise to keep them separate for a bit. Learning the proper ways to breed is essential when trying to create a peaceful environment for these creatures.

To prevent any incidents, it may be wise to keep them separate until such a time when they are required to breed. There is a history of violence among these creatures where they may try to actively harm one another. Keep them in separate cages, although they can be kept in the same room.

At some point, they may come into condition. Normally, it is the male who will be first. A sign may be the dropping of their wings as they sing, which will become somewhat louder and harsher. Dancing around the perch is another trait. The females will look as if they are readying a nest. The most tell tale sign would be when the vent will appear swollen and red.

Once all the signs have been noticed, slowly introduce them. Note that there are special cages that will be quite conductive to this, without having one harm the other. These are cages with two dividers in them, one which is wire and the other one being solid. The barriers must not be removed until after the nest is built.

Speaking of nests, one must be added to the environment. These things can be bought at local pet shops and can be either wire or plastic. They can even be lined with certain liners that are very accessible to the canary. Sometimes the canary itself may choose to build their own or add to one.

Feeding them right is another must. The diet must consist of enriched seed, which is considered a fairly proper diet for them. Some can also have access to tiny pieces of fruit on a daily basis. A grit or a cuttle bone may also come recommended for additional calcium in the case of the female.

One sign that they are ready to breed is when they kiss. The act ought to be obvious enough for people to see and it may be shortly after introduction or it may take a long while. Again, separate them whenever necessary in the event that they start to fight amongst each other.

After some more time, observe their nest and see the results for yourself. They can lay as much as eight eggs, although five is a much more common quantity. Fourteen days is the typical waiting period for the eggs to hatch. Separate the chicks and once they start eating on their own, get them a cage of their own. For more canary breeding, simply repeat the process.
