Benefits And Shortcomings Of Feeding Alfalfa Cube

By Cornelia Reyes

A good alternative to feeding your horse long stem hay is feeding alfalfa cube to them. These are mainly forage made in cube form and they can be used as roughage to aid in your horses digestion. Important nutrients needed for the growth of your horse are usually concentrated in high quantities in the alfalfa cubes. They can be made specifically to the needs of your horse and what is more, you can feed it also to other stock that you have like pigs and guinea pigs.

Feeding your horse forage cube is very beneficial when it comes to saving on feed. It is widely known that a horse will consume all the forage cubes presented to it unlike where it becomes very choosy where long stem hay is concerned. This makes sure you do not end up wasting horses feed which you would have had you fed the horse long stem hay, and it decides on consuming the leaves alone.

Another benefit to be considered in choosing to feed alfalfa cubes to your horse is that you will be able to censor the quantity that the horse consumes over a period of time. The horse will eat all the feed you give it unlike in long stem hay where a certain portion will be wasted.

A merit that we should note is that the cubes have a certain ration of nutrients in it. This makes it easier for an owner of a horse to know the daily nutrient intake of said horse. Unlike in giving the horse long stem hay to eat.

Another benefit that we should note is that a forage cube does not have dust that usually plagues long stem hay. This is to say that your horse will not be exposed to lung problems brought about by dust and in some instances mold. This can be found in long stem hay.

Keeping alfalfa cubes is very easy compared to long stem hay as they can be mechanically packed in a lorry or shed. This is because they are not as dense as long-stem hay therefore they do not require much handling and storage space.

Like everything else, the alfalfa cubes have demerits. One of the main demerits is that the forage cubes are very expensive when you compare it to long stem hay. The processing and transportation costs involved in the forage cubes make them very uneconomical.

Another shortcoming is that the alfalfa cubes are very perishable especially if not stored in dry conditions. Any dampness that comes interacts with it, no matter how small makes the forage cubes inedible and you have to discard them. You will need to have a special shed that is always dry and is not exposed to humidity built.

Feeding alfalfa cube to your horse can lead to grave overconsumption issues. You have to carefully censor the amount you give to your horse as the horse will eat everything otherwise leading to it suffering from digestive and overweight problems.
