French Bulldog puppies for sale are comical and curious little dogs. Exercise needs are minimal. If you're looking for an affectionate lap dog that doesn't need a yard to run in, this may be the breed you've been looking for. They do retain some of the stubborn character of their ancestor, the English Bulldog. They do best if their human companions provide consistent pack leadership.

Downsized bulldogs were favored by textile workers in 19th century England. They were prized for their rat hunting skills. When mechanization displaced the workers, many moved to France. The French fell in love with this breed immediately and it became known as the French Bulldog. Wealthy Americans touring the continent also fell in love with this playful and adorable little lap dog. Transplanted to America, breed clubs were soon organized to set breed standards and create a registry.

This is a playful, comical, affectionate little dog. With proper socialization, they'll enjoy and enthusiastically greet strangers and other dogs. A few minutes of obedience practice daily will keep your tenacious little bulldog behaving like a wonderful family pet.

Adult dogs weigh 19-28 pounds. They live 10-12 years. There body shape is muscular and compact. They have a large square head and a flat nose. The ears are large and erect, noted for resembling the ears of a bat. Skin is loose and wrinkled around the eyes, head, shoulders. This is an easy care dog with minimal grooming needs. Just keep the folds of their wrinkly skin clean and dry. Colors are fawn, tan or white with brindle patches, or brindle.

Health wise this breed can be more expensive than your average dog. Respiratory problems make anesthesia difficult. They're prone to joint diseases, spinal disorders, heart defects, and eye problems. Screening parent dogs before breeding by the Canine Eye Registration Foundations reduces the likelihood of eye disease. A dog door is okay but they should never be left in the yard while their human companions go off to work. With their flat noses, French Bulldogs are unable to regulate their body temperature. They can't tolerate extreme temperatures or extreme exercise. They're susceptible to heat stroke so don't walk in the heat of the day. With top heavy, muscular bodies, most can't swim.

Some members of this breed will drool or slobber when excited. All will wheeze and snore. Avoid extra weight which adds to their respiratory problems. Remember they love to play and explore, but can't tolerate weather extremes or long hikes.

Maintaining pack leadership is easy with just a short little walk that includes training exercises. Then you'll have a great fun loving, playful, comical, and sociable companion. Children should participate in training exercises learning to provide consistent pack leadership. Females of this breed often exhibit a maternal tendency to guard children.

Choose a breeder that is a an active member of a breed club. Ask what health testing has been done on the parents and/or the puppies.
