Facts About Australian Labradoodle Therapy Dogs

By Leslie Griffith

If you are trying to find facts about Australian labradoodle therapy dogs then you can find many different choices and options to choose from. Labradoodles were bred from combining the English Labrador and the Large Poodle together. Many people who have allergy issues can own one as a pet or service animal since many people consider them to be hypoallergenic.

The breed is often used as service and therapy companion animals because of the fact that they are so often calm and gentle around other pets and young children. Probably the first person to cross breed the Labrador and the Poodle was Wally Conron who was from Australia and a dog breeder. The original idea was to take the good traits from both breeds and combine them into one new breed.

The Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia based out of Victoria was one of the first programs to use the breed starting in 1988. The animals can be widely used as guides, therapy canines, and assistance animals for people who need that kind of help and services. Many breeders try to look for the best qualities from the breed so that the puppies will grow up to be well trained service animals.

Currently, no major breed association or kennel club any where in the World recognize them as an official breed to be registered. There are some famous people who even own the breed such as the Norwegian royal family where the Crown Prince and Princess both own a puppy from the breed. The Labradoodle is not an official breed so they do not display distinct characteristics that a specific breed would.

Labradoodles are often very friendly as well as energetic. The animals do very well being in families with smaller children and other canines. A dog will most often display a natural likeness for playing and swimming in the water. Often they will desire to swim when they are given an opportunity to do so. The dogs can be breed from either both parents already being hybrids or by one parent being a Labrador Retriever and the other one being a Poodle.

The fur can have a wide range of differences from curly, wire textured, and even wooly varieties. Some times a puppy can look more like a Labrador Retriever and other times they may look more like a Standard Poodle and each puppy is unique and can look like a combination of both parents depending on the genetics. Colors will also vary greatly from white, yellow, tan, brown, and black.

There are both clubs and organizations available that try to promote the breed since they are hybrids. The breed will most likely at this point never be officially recognized in world wide kennel clubs and official organizations but they still make a great companion and pet. The dogs are usually well behaved around children and other animals.
