Toy Australian Shepherd Breeders OK

By Georgia Diaz

Puppies from Toy Australian Shepherd breeders OK are not just lookalikes, they actually retain the personality of their standard sized relative. They're adorable, exuberant, loving, loyal, athletic. With an active owner to run, walk, and play with, this little dog will be at home on the ranch, in the suburbs, in the city. If you spend long hours away from home and/or want a calm little lap dog to cuddle with, this is not the breed for you.

Socialization begins when puppies are born in the safe confines of the breeders home. Review the buyers contract. Be sure you understand the terms and limitations of the health guarantee and any buy back policy. You should also take home vet records and registration papers when you take home your new puppy.

Parent dogs should be certified free of eye disorders by CERF. Puppies are checked for eye anomalies when they're between 6 and 9 weeks old. Parent dogs should be checked by OFA for hip dysplasia or luxating patella before breeding.

Toy Australian Shepherds can carry the MDR1 gene, causing sensitivity to medications safe for other breeds. A DNA test can check for this mutation. Dogs with this gene can't tolerate acepromazine, Imodium, or Invermectin (used in many deworming and heartworm products).

Although not recognized by the AKC, National and international championships are hosted by the Toy Australian Shepherd Association in America, International All Breed Canine Association, and American Rare Breed Association. Breed registries include TASAA, MASCUSA, IMASC, NMAMSCUSA, MASCA, NSDR, ASDR, APRI, DRA, and ASCA.

This perpetual puppy is loyal, affectionate, intuitive, and exuberant. They can be territorial and cautious around strangers. Some show aggression to dogs they don't know. Sometimes the herding instinct drives this little dog to nip at his family's heels. This behavior should be stopped early on with gentle but firm training.

The Australian Shepherd is descended from the little blue sheep herding dog of Basque shepherds. Ranchers needed a larger, hardier dog to withstand the climate extremes of the Wild West. By the 1930's, the Australian Shepherd was renowned for its intelligence, athleticism, hardiness, herding, and versatility. In the late 60's, smaller dogs became desirable. Breeders bred healthy smaller offspring to healthy smaller offspring, producing miniatures, and eventually toys.

Coat colors are black, red, red merle, blue merle. A bi color has white markings. A tri color has white and tan markings. Merles should never be mated with each other. A recessive gene in the merle line causes deafness and/or blindness.

It's not unusual for this little dog to have one blue eye and one brown eye. They can also have amber eyes, and combination eyes showing flecks or marbling. Most puppies are born with a long tail that is docked when they're 3 days old.

Toy dogs are 10"-14" at the shoulder, weigh 12-19 pounds, and live 12-14 years. The undercoat sheds twice a year, fall and spring. Brush daily when shedding, and once a week year round.

This quiet little dog adjusts well to apartment life with daily walks and fun games to play. He also loves suburban and ranch life as long as he has the company of his pack. They excel at fetch, frisbee, and agility. If you want a loyal, exuberant, energetic little companion, look no further than Toy Australian Shepherd breeders OK.
