What Are The Smartest Dog Breeds

By Geraldine Dimarco

Are you planning to have a pet? Maybe you are looking through some canine sites and you want to know what are the best types of dogs you should get. What are your requirements? They should look handsome of course, but most dogs are loveable in their own right. If you want an intelligent companion who you can have around the house and is safe to leave with your family-read on for the smartest dog breeds you can own.

Doberman Pinscher takes the fifth spot in the smartest dog category. Most of us are familiar with this breed. They are muscular, streamlined and have a short, shiny coat (usually in black, red or dark blue)-thereby making grooming a very simple task. Dobermans are easily trained, fearless, alert, obedient and energetic and this makes them ideal watchdogs, guardians and companions of human beings.

Golden Retrievers are probably the most well-loved canines in the world. And why not? The Golden Retriever exemplifies the very best in dogs. They are very smart, eager to please, loyal, affectionate and great with children. They have beautiful long golden hair that should be groomed regularly. You will find Retrievers also winning many performance dog shows.

The third spot for the brightest dog is the German Shepherd. They are intelligent, courageous, loyal and have very strong protective instincts. Large dog breeds that are as sharp as the German Shepherds are excellent in working hand in hand (or paw?) with their human counterparts in important tasks like search and rescue, guides, bomb sniffing, etc.

If you have a Poodle, you'll probably not be surprised to find them second on this prestigious list. These elegant, happy and sensitive canines may not exhibit the same muscular strength as the aforementioned animals, but they are extremely sharp nonetheless. Gypsies used to employ Poodles as part of their acts because these dainty creatures are very easy to train.

Care to venture a guess as to what breed gets the top rank as the cleverest dog there is? If you said the Border Collie, then you are correct. This medium-sized dog breed is renowned for its almost humanlike intelligence. They are extremely sharp, instinctive, agile, energetic and obedient. They were often used by shepherds before to help in herding the large flocks of sheep. They can understand and execute even complex tasks and can learn new commands fairly quickly.

OK, so you have a smart pet-be prepared to maintain them. What does this mean? Remember, intelligent animals need mental and physical stimulation to be happy. If they feel bored and have no purpose you may have trouble with them. Large dog breeds in particular can be more problematic because you don't want them to be destructive inside your home. Engage them in frequent exercise to help give vent to excess energy in a positive way.

These are the smartest dog breeds around-so what do you say, are you ready for one yourself? Make sure to give them a good diet and have regular visits to the vet. A healthy and happy pet is one of the highest joys there is in life. Enjoy!
