You have made a wonderful decision! Now what do you do? Both you and your best friend will be very be happy together if he is properly trained. Read these tips to find out how you can train your dog efficiently.

Make sure that the only items your dog can reach are chew toys that are specifically made for dogs. You should replace the object with a chew toy as soon as this occurs so your dog understands what is okay to chew on. A wet frozen washcloth is great for a puppy, who has teething pain, to chew on.

Put yourself in the dog's situation. It is easy to get frustrated with your dog if they are not learning very basic things quickly or at all. Don't do yourself and your pet an injustice by simply giving up. Thinking like a dog can make it easier for you to do what is needed to train him. Your training will improve if you view things the way they do.

Are you house training your dog? If so, then understand that the food and water they consume must come out at some point. To have your dog on a consistent bathroom schedule, have him or her eating quality food about two or three times every day, at the exact same time. If you know when the puppy eats, you will be able to better predict when to take him out. This means fewer accidents!

Approach an unknown dog slowly and let him smell your outstretched hand. Extending your hand lets the animal familiarize himself with your unique scent, making him more receptive to a friendly interaction. The dog will no longer be afraid after he is able to recongnize the scent and may begin to follow commands.

It is important to leash-train your dog. The safety of both of you while out walking is paramount, and the proper training will ensure this.

Teaching a new puppy to "leave it" is very important and one of the first commands that you should work on. This simple command is beneficial in making him stop on chewing furniture inside the house.

You indicate that jumping up is an unacceptable behavior by grabbing the dogs paws, squeezing gently and guiding them back down to the ground. This will not hurt him, but it is quite uncomfortable. It won't take long for your dog to associate the unpleasant sensation with the act of jumping up, and he will quickly stop doing so.

If you want to train a new puppy to walk on a leash, the first step is to put a collar on the young puppy while you are playing with him. Making sure your new dog is comfortable with a collar is important, particularly if you want to take them on walks and have some sort of identification tags for them to carry.

Teach your dog to learn 'down'. You can use it in an emergency, for example. If you teach your dog how to get 'down', this might help in an emergency.

When training your dog, never punish him. Your training efforts should be to prevent bad behavior. Teach your dog what constitutes inappropriate behavior, and what is an acceptable behavior. Training sessions help build communication with your pet, and help you build a good relationship.

Use your dog's name as many times as you can, this will keep his attention on you. When you first get a dog it is important to say his name often, so that he will associate it to himself and will be more apt to pay attention to you when you call it. Choose a short name that is easily recognizable from other words.

Effective dog training requires instilling good behaviors from day one. it is more difficult for your dog has to unlearn bad habits than it is to teach him good habits. Never give a dog food scraps from the table so that it does not get into the bad habit of begging for them.

When it comes to training your dog, never give up. Your canine will need to constantly be reinforced, or what you teach them can be forgotten. Food and shelter are lifelong needs for your dog, and training is no different.

Remember that more difficult behaviors should be approached in steps. A simple example is teaching your dog to get the morning paper. The first thing you should do is to teach him how to hold something. You then want to teach it names for different objects to make sure it knows differences in names. The next thing he should be taught is how to pick objects up. Finally, show him that you want the object brought to you. Separating the commands allows a better understanding of the process for your dog.

A big dog that enjoys stretching or lying on his back needs an appropriately sized bed. You can buy a large bed for your large-breed dog, or even get a crib mattress to use as your dog's bed. A crib mattress is also an easy to care for alternative to a dog bed because the sheets can be changed regularly with little fuss. These mattresses are usually waterproof also.

It is important when training your dog that he always feels safe and secure. Insecure dogs are more likely to engage in bad behaviors or to lash out unexpectedly. To prevent this from happening with your dog, always make sure his environment is conducive to feelings of comfort and safety.

If you notice any behavioral problems pop up out of the blue, you should take your dog to the veterinarian to make sure that there are no health issues causing it. There are some illnesses or health conditions that may cause the dog to act out. This behavior is an indicator to humans that there is something wrong.

With the proper training, both you and your dog can be happy. With the information here, you are on your way to successfully training your dog.
