By Odessa Edwards

When searching for Ragdoll kittens for sale Northern California residents should first contact local breeders. More and more people are learning of the endearing ways of this large, muscular cat. They are very social creatures and love the company of humans. They are not suited to homes where they will be on their own all day.

It is an American breed and much sought after by both those who love cats and show breeders. Average weights range from fifteen to twenty pounds. Alley cats might be half these weights. Original breeds used to create the Ragdoll are said to be Persians, Birmans and long-haired alley cats. Ragdolls look like more like a Siamese/Maine Coon cross.

The laid-back, relaxed disposition is very attractive to cat-lovers. They tend to go limp when picked up hence the name 'Ragdoll'. They are great with children. While older people would love a cat which is so affectionate and willing to be held and cuddled, they might find these tend to get under their feet too much. This could cause falls and subsequent injury.

They have large paws. The eyes are blue. They do need daily grooming although their coats are not as thick as some fluffy breeds, consisting mainly of long guard hairs. They do not have the dense undercoat of some breeds. Use a steel brush and comb to keep the coat under control. This will also help minimize shedding. They are very people-oriented and not above learning a few party tricks. Some say they have more dog-like qualities than cat-like. They are bold and will not hesitate to take on stray cats or dogs. They need to be supervised if allowed outside.

The points of Ragdolls are darker than the rest of the body. Colors include chocolate, lilac, cream, red, seal and blue. They are a slow-maturing breed. The kittens are born white and will color up at around eight weeks of age. By three or four years of age, they have their full. Mitted cats have white paws and belly. The bicolor has white legs and belly, an inverted white 'V' on the face and perhaps white patches on the back. Tabby and tortoiseshell coloring is also found.

Ragdolls are generally healthy. Urinary tract infections affect some. Because they have a straight nose, they don't suffer from breathing problems like breeds with a squashed-in face. Regular grooming will help reduce the incidence of hairballs as does the administration of hairball remedies.

A disease which affects cats of all breeds is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This is inherited from generation to generation. The heart wall thickens. This compromises the circulatory system. The gene responsible for this disorder can now be detected by special tests. Reputable breeders will have had their breeding stock tested for HCM.

When choosing your new kitten look for bright, shiny eyes. There should be no discharge from the eyes or nose. The fur should be clean and shiny. They should be nicely rounded with the ribs well covered but without a pot belly as this could indicate worms. When sourcing Ragdoll kittens for sale Northern California residents should contact reputable breeders.
