Things To Know About Cockapoo Puppies

By Lana Bray

Designer dogs are created by crossing two purebred dogs with the aim of having offspring that have the desirable traits from both types of their parents. At times this is exactly what occurs but at other times it doesn't quite work out as intended. Mother nature can be quite unpredictable in this way and you don't know exactly what you'll get. These hybrid dogs, like the cockapoo, do tend to have a certain level of predictability in some of their attributes though. For anyone considering getting cockapoo puppies, knowing a bit about them can be helpful.

Of all the designer dogs available today, cockapoos were the first, appearing much earlier than most other varieties. The name comes from the fact that they are a hybrid of a cocker spaniel and a poodle. One can get cockapoo puppies from one parent of each breed or from two cockapoos mating.

There is no one particular way that these dogs will look. Puppies from the same litter can even appear quite different according to which traits they received from which parent. Most are small with a weight in adulthood generally between 6 and 20 pounds. They can be any number of different colors and may have solid coloring or multiple colors on them them. A long coat that can be anywhere from straight to loosely curly is typical.

These dogs can be expected to have lots of personality. Active, affectionate and happy are terms that are often used to describe them. Because of their intelligence they are usually very trainable. They are very social dogs that thrive on being around people and can often be good with other dogs and cats as well. Cockapoos tend to get along well with children, particularly older, more considerate ones.

Crossbred dogs are generally considered to have fewer health problems than purebred ones but any type can have problems. There are a few conditions that tend to occur somewhat frequently in cockapoos. Luxating patellas, or loose knees, is one example. Eye disorders can be fairly common as well. As with other types of floppy-eared dogs, they can easily get ear infections from moisture being trapped inside.

All pets need to be properly cared for. Starting from a very young age, these dogs need to have exposure to a wide variety of people and experiences. Walking and playing are good types of exercise, which these energetic puppies need plenty of. Being around people most of the time is vital to their happiness and overall wellbeing. With longer periods of isolation, they can suffer from separation anxiety which may cause destructive behavior. Ear infections can be limited by keeping the ears clean and dry.

Poodles are known for their hypoallergenic coat. This is a reason that they are often used in cross breeding. Many cockapoos will have this trait as well, possibly making them suitable for people who have allergies to dogs. This, however, is not always the case and will vary from individual to individual depending on their particular genetics.

Cockapoo puppies are quite popular and can be found easily. Happy and energetic, they can make for great companions. There is little question why so many so people choose them.
