The Many Kinds Of Pig Farms

By Lianne Derocco

Pork production has always been in such high demand in nearly all parts of the globe and this is a fact that should be dealt with by farmers. It is common knowledge that the one type of food that people love to eat most is that which is based on pork. If one were to roam around and check out the dinner tables, one definitely would find pork in many of these. This is the reason why many pig farmers are always on extra efforts to produce more and meet the rising demands of the market.

In most countries around the world, pork is considered as a major meat source. In fact, it surpasses beef, chicken, and turkey when it comes to popularity. Since it has been a common preference by consumer, especially in Asian countries such as China, hog farm owners are continually challenged to produce more. To do this though, they do have to deal with some very important concerns related to better productivity, including sanitation and the health of the pigs in the farm.

The United States is known as one of the most avid consumers of food based on pork. It is for this reason that the country also happens to have so many different types of hog farms. All these do not just cater to the local market but also the consumers who are also based abroad. In fact many of the said farms export their products. Among the types that are found in the country, it is the farrow-to-finish farm that involves all of the stages of production, from breeding to slaughter and finishing.

Farms that breed and take care of piglets until they are already 50 pounds in weight each are called farrow-to-nursery farms. These definitely need the attention of the farm owners or managers. Aside from this, special equipment may also be necessary. A farrow-to-wean farm is only for breeding the pigs. Once the pigs are already 15 pounds and once these are weaned, the said farm would make these available to other farms.

Unless these are sold to the processing plants, the pigs from the farrow-to-wean farms are delivered to the wean-to-finish farms. Normally, the wean-to-finish farms would acquire pigs that are already about 15 pounds. The said pigs are then raised until they are big enough for the market. Once they are already at a marketable weight, these are slaughtered made ready for delivery. Finishing farms are those that procure feeder pigs that are already 40 pounds or more. These are the ones that sell the pigs to the end-market.

No matter what type of farm there is, hog waste management has always been a very serious matter that needs to be dealt with. However, there are already solutions that are made available. One of these is AgraSphere. AgraSphere is an easy and natural way of resolving problems like top-level crusting, sludge, odors, and fly infestation in hog waste lagoons. This product contains no chemicals and instead relies on helpful bacteria to reduce sludge and eliminate crusting.
